As parents, we can sometimes be protective of our children. To some extent, that’s our job, though we’ve all known parents who take it too far. I think most of us can think of a few stories where a parent has done it, and while we might cringe and wonder what the kid’s therapy bill will look like in the future, it’s usually not anything we should be alarmed with beyond that.
Enter Florida Man.
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, people from Florida reproduce, and as terrifying as that might be for some, the reality is that it’s not bad when a Florida woman and man have kids. It’s when Florida Man–yes, the capital letters matter–does it, then gets his knickers in a twist because someone spoke unkindly toward said offspring.
An investigation, which included a review of dashboard camera footage from the bus, showed that the suspect Otoniel “Oto” Calos O’Valle arrived at the bus stop just after 8 a.m. with his two children. He spoke with the bus driver, who was a substitute that day.
“He then removed an all black handgun from his waistband and asked whether she was the regular driver,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
O’Valle reportedly told the driver it was her “lucky day,” after he found out she wasn’t the regular driver. He then put the gun back in his pocket and told the woman he “was upset because the regular driver had previously yelled at his children.”
Under Florida law, school bus stops count as school property for the purposes of carrying a firearm. I’m not thrilled with that as a law for a lot of reasons, but that doesn’t matter because it’s not like O’Valle is alleged to have simply made a mistake of carrying a firearm while escorting his kids and trying to act in a lawful manner.
It seems pretty damn clear that the intention here was, at a minimum, to intimidate the regular bus driver to treat his children in a particular manner. I don’t know if the regular driver was out of line when he allegedly yelled at O’Valle’s kids or not, but considering the father’s alleged actions, I’m going to guess the yelling was warranted.
Even if it wasn’t, flashing a gun and making a threat against the regular driver isn’t how rational people handle things.
When my oldest was in school, I had the occasion to take issue with staff members before. Once was based on the treatment of my son, and what I did was contact the teacher’s boss. I didn’t threaten the teacher in question because I’m not a psychopath. While I was pissed as hell over what happened, I wasn’t about to even imply I was going to take her life over it, and this was worse than my kid getting yelled at.
O’Valle was charged with aggravated assault on a public transit employee and possession of a firearm on school property, and I think he’s fortunate that he didn’t get more charges.
This is a prime example of how not to be a gun owner. I’m going to call this kind of behavior out for the rest of my life when I see it, because people like O’Valle make the rest of us look bad, especially if we don’t call them out.
