South Carolina Gun Store Robbery Shows What it Takes to Steal Guns

Anti-gun organizations love to blame licensed gun dealers for criminals getting firearms, but the truth of the matter is that most of the time, it’s not the dealer’s fault. They can do everything right, only for guns the sold to end up in the bad guys’ hands.

The thing is, though, a lot of times, the bad guys may get a gun from a gun store, but they aren’t spending money, if you catch my drift.

That’s right, they break into the store and take what they want. What’s more, it doesn’t require a master thief to do it.

The Spartanburg Police Department reports a burglary committed by driving a vehicle into a pawn shop Thursday was caught on camera.

According to a police report, officers responded to Spartanburg Gun & Pawn on East Main Street, where the owner provided security video of a burglary.

The video showed a white Hyundai Elantra reverse into the side floor-to-ceiling window twice until it and a metal gate were broken. A man wearing a multi-colored hoodie, dark-colored pants and white shoes was seen standing next to the vehicle talking to the driver before the action took place.

The man and the driver, wearing a light-colored hoodie, dark pants and black shoes, were seen going into the business and using bolt cutters to cut a security cable on the gun rack. They ran through the main shop area before collecting multiple AR-15 style rifles from the rack and leaving the building, according to the report.

Needless to say, they didn’t fill out a Form 4473, nor did they undergo a background check.

There have been attempts by cities to force stores to have “better” security to prevent these kinds of break-ins, but the truth is that there’s not a whole lot you can do. Zoning laws in many places relegate gun stores to some of the worst parts of town, primarily because the wealthier anti-gunners in the city can’t seem to comprehend that the gun store itself doesn’t cause crime.

Because of where they’re located, they tend to have to rent or buy buildings built with less-than-stellar construction methods. Even if they weren’t, though, most buildings in the United States are far from immune to a car ramming into them from literally any direction. The only way it would have stopped the car is if they’d rammed the vault.

Look, gun theft is already illegal, so I’m not going to pretend we should pass a law to make it extra illegal. Who do I look like, Shannon Watts?

What I will say is that this is more evidence that if someone wants a gun, they will get a gun. Everyone in a town knows where the gun store is if they only care to look. Google will helpfully provide an entire list for you. If a bad guy wants a gun, they’ll do something like these two twerps or any of a thousand others who broke into gun stores using smash-and-grab techniques that are hardly the work of Ocean’s 11.

And there’s nothing anyone can do to prevent them beyond working to pull people off of the criminal life path so many are on.
