James Talarico’s Attempted Political Makeover Fails to Fool Texas Voters [WATCH]

Texas Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico is drawing renewed scrutiny over his policy positions after a recent podcast appearance in which he appeared to distance himself from several issues that have been central to his political record in the Texas House, as reported by Townhall.

Talarico joined longtime Democratic attorney Dan Cogdell for an interview on Cogdell’s podcast, where the conversation touched on a range of topics expected to play a major role in the upcoming Senate race.

During the discussion, Talarico described himself in ways that critics argue conflict with positions he has previously supported as a state lawmaker.

Among the most closely watched moments of the interview was Talarico’s discussion of medical procedures involving minors who identify as transgender.

The comments drew attention because of Talarico’s voting record in the Texas Legislature.

In 2023, he was among 56 House Democrats who voted against legislation that prohibited transition surgeries for minors and barred taxpayer funding for such procedures.

At the time, Talarico strongly opposed the legislation and delivered remarks on the House floor criticizing the measure. During that debate, he called the proposal “the most dangerous bill that’s being heard on this floor this session.”

The Senate candidate also addressed gun rights during the podcast, saying that he “is a believer in the Second Amendment.”

That statement has prompted comparisons to previous positions associated with his campaign. Talarico has previously expressed support for restrictions on certain semi-automatic firearms.

His campaign platform has also called for universal background checks and additional limitations on the purchase of semi-automatic rifles.

Immigration was another issue discussed during the interview. Talarico described himself as a “border security Democrat,” a label that comes as border enforcement remains one of the dominant political issues in Texas.

His campaign platform has supported legal status pathways for some illegal immigrants, including proposals involving individuals who have remained in the country for extended periods and certain individuals who marry American citizens.

Talarico has also supported policies that critics say align with more progressive immigration positions, including proposals restricting the use of face coverings by ICE agents during enforcement operations.

Past comments have also resurfaced in connection with the debate.

Statements from 2019 show Talarico criticizing immigration policies associated with former President Barack Obama and expressing support for defunding Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Energy policy emerged as another notable topic during the interview. Talarico emphasized the importance of protecting Texas’ oil and gas industry, an issue that remains a cornerstone of the state’s economy.

Talarico previously advanced legislation that would require climate change instruction in public schools and backed emissions-reduction proposals that sought to lower emissions levels to 10 percent of 1990 levels by 2050.

The interview also featured a lighter moment when Talarico ate barbecue at the start of the discussion. The move appeared aimed at countering claims regarding veganism that have circulated during the campaign.

The Texas Senate race is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 election cycle.

Talarico is scheduled to face Republican nominee Ken Paxton in the November general election, setting up a statewide contest that will likely focus heavily on immigration, energy, firearms, and cultural issues.
