Kimmel: Elon Musk Is ‘An Immigrant Who Has Been Stealing From Us’

Yesterday afternoon I wrote this:

I suspect that tomorrow the real work of demagoguery will being and we’ll start seeing thousands of voices echoing whatever Bernie Sanders has to say about it. Tonight is the calm before the storm.

As it turned out, we didn’t have to wait until today for the ritual denunciations of Elon Musk to begin. The Globe and Mail in Canada was already on it with this article:

Opinion: SpaceX IPO makes Elon Musk the first trillionaire. Here’s how to properly hate him https://t.co/qAQVdquwCP

— The Globe and Mail (@globeandmail) June 11, 2026

The article makes the case that it’s not Musk’s wealth we should hate at all, but his political influence.

There are competing schools of thought about the accumulation of wealth, among them the anarchist claim that “property is theft” and the Gordon Gekko theory of greed as a star-spangled virtue.

It’s a lot easier to subscribe to Gekkonomics when you view capitalism as a poker game where there’s no guarantee that one player won’t end up with all the chips. That’s an unequal outcome, but it’s not an unfair one as long as everyone plays by the rules. Indeed, an equal distribution of the chips would be unfair if one talented player deserves to win them all.

As bad as the headline is, the article is a work of staggering genius compared to the predictable garbage that came out of Jimmy Kimmel last night. After explaining what an IPO and the fact that Musk is on track to become a trillionaire, Kimmel goes on to echo the case against Musk being made by Elizabeth Warren. Remember, this is a comedy monologue.

You see with SpaceX it will enter the stock market so highly valued a lot of 401K’s will get triggered to invest in it automatically. That’s how it works, which could be very risky for retirement accounts because SpaceX doesn’t make money, it lost $5 billion dollars last year. Typically, public companies that don’t make a profit aren’t automatically added to your 401K but SpaceX would be so gigantic at the IPO the index would just have to take it and the person who said you don’t need to save for retirement because in 10 to 20 years the robots I sell you will provide everything you need will be rolling around like a pig in your retirement account.

Basically this maneuver could make Elon a trillionaire and your parents WalMart greeters. Okay?

All of that setup took 41 seconds for a joke that got a mild laugh. He then went into another long set up for helping people conceptualize a trillion dollars.

A trillion dollars. It’s hard for our brains to conceptualize that. I mean, we know a trillion is a number but it’s so large we can’t fathom it, the same way we know that Elon has a lot of kids but we can’t fathom him getting laid, right?

Let me try to illustrate it. If you tried to count out loud to a trillion you would be counting until the year 33,736. A trillion dollars is ten billion hundred dollar bills. If you stacked them up the pile would be almost 700 miles high, as tall as 123 Mount Everests. With that kind of money Elon could buy every NFL team…he could buy all 30 Major League Baseball teams, every NBA team, every Wendy’s every Target store, the Beatles entire music catalogue. He could buy Nike, Macy’s and every Hyundai Elantra ever produced.

All of this presents the idea that maybe Elon has a Scrooge McDuck vault where he keeps his stacks of $100 bills, but of course that’s not why he’s a trillionaire. He’s a trillionaire because he created and owns a portion of two successful companies, one that revolutionized the car business and one that revolutionized rocket flights to orbit and global satellite communications. His money isn’t a stack of bills, it’s ownership of these valuable companies. He can’t buy up all the country’s sports teams unless he wants to first sell all of his ownership of his own companies.

Kimmel probably knows this but the real story isn’t as good as the image of a stack of bills 700 miles high if your goal is to demonize someone. And that leads up to his final comment.

Elon Musk came to the United States from South Africa in 1995, the son of a humble emerald mine owner and he is so grateful to this country that allowed him to become a trillionaire, Tesla paid almost no federal income tax over the past three years. You know, for a guy who has been openly cheering immigrants getting kicked out of the country for stealing form us, sure seems like an immigrant who has been stealing from us to me.

Tesla employs more than 70,000 Americans. SpaceX employs another 22,000 and thanks to Musk all of them are doing very well. In fact, the cafeteria workers at SpaceX are expected to become millionaires this week.

The Times reported that some of the workers who could see life-changing wealth include hourly blue-collar employees who worked at launch sites. Bloomberg’s Jessica Karl put an even more striking image on it, writing that the SpaceX cafeteria is about to be full of millionaires (2).

“I guess it’s too late for me to pivot careers to become a food service specialist in Brownsville, Texas,” Karl joked, referencing an online post (3) that says “SpaceX’s IPO is expected to create 4,000 new millionaires, including some cafeteria workers whose compensation packages include employee stock options.”

The idea that he’s “stealing” from Americans is absurd. He’s created a lot more jobs and more wealth than Jimmy Kimmel who, for contrast, employs about 200 people on his dopey show.

But as I said yesterday, none of this is about celebrating success which is good for tens of thousands of Americans and for the country in general. This is about demonizing a convenient hate figure, someone the left hates almost as much as President Trump.

So expect to see a lot more angry tirades like this one over the next few weeks. Mocking other people’s success is really what the Democratic Party is increasingly about. Kimmel fits right in with Mayor Mamdani, Ro Khanna, AOC and the rest of the DSA members making envy into a political art form.
