Tell Me Again How Gun Laws Would Disarm This 17-Year-Old Wyoming Teen

When I was 17, I was worried about whether I’d get into college–not enough to actually study, mind you, but I worried–and I worried if I’d ever get a girlfriend. I might worry about how to score beer for a weekend party from time to time, but that and speeding were about as far as my criminality would ever get, and as someone who was both a moronic teenager and had ADHD, thus no impulse control to speak of, it’s telling that it never got worse.

I’ve never understood teenagers who engage in some hardcore criminality, and I’ll never understand the people who think more gun control laws will somehow stop people like this Wyoming kid.

A Casper teen accused of attacking his mother led police to a hidden cache of stolen firearms tucked behind a secret wall in his bedroom.

Honor Jason Wickert, 17, appeared Tuesday afternoon in Natrona County Circuit Court, where he was formally charged with four felonies and several misdemeanors, including interference, domestic battery, carrying a concealed weapon, and being a minor in possession of tobacco products.

Natrona County District Attorney Dan Itzen confirmed Wednesday morning that prosecutors are charging Wickert as an adult.

Court documents paint a picture of a family dispute that escalated into a foot chase through Casper neighborhoods and ended with police uncovering several stolen firearms, credit cards, and more.

The four felony theft charges alone carry a combined maximum penalty of 40 years in prison if served consecutively. Additional jail time could be imposed for the misdemeanor charges.

This spawned out of a family altercation where the mother forced her way into Wickert’s room, where she saw vape pens and what looked like a credit card skimmer machine. Wickert then replaced his doorknob with a locking one. Then, days later, the mom tried to take his cell phone, leading to him assaulting her.

But the story gets weirder from there.

Wickert called the police himself.

According to court records, he reported that his mother was accusing him of stealing her belongings and kicking doors inside the home.

Officers instructed him to wait for law enforcement.

Instead, he took off running.

Police allege Wickert fled through multiple backyards near South Forest Drive and Seminole Street, tossing two backpacks as officers searched for him.

One backpack contained a Springfield Armory 9mm handgun later confirmed stolen, along with ammunition, vape devices, gloves and a flashlight.

Another contained a wallet holding multiple bank and credit cards belonging to other people.

Among the items recovered was a handwritten note that read:

“Hi my sweet boy,” the note read. “I don’t know if you’re gonna go to jail, but I want you to know that I will wait for you.”

The mother led police to his room, where a number of handguns were found behind a wall: Two Ruger LCPs, a Springfield Hellcat Pro, and a Glock 43.

Now, I get that Wyoming is a pretty permissive state. It’s kind of awesome that way. However, no level of permissiveness would allow a 17-year-old to allegedly acquire five handguns as well as stolen credit cards. It just does not exist.

It’s unknown if Wickert stole the guns himself or acquired them from someone else, but the truth is that he had them; at least three have been shown to be stolen, with the rest likely reported stolen but without a serial number provided to police.

Yes, we could get into how the mother might have let too much slide for way too long, thus leading this young man down the wrong road. We could get into how various subcultures valorize illegality as a way of life, making it look glamorous and masculine. We could talk about a lot of things, but at the end of the day, we don’t know where Wickert allegedly went wrong.

What we do know is that he’s facing serious grown-up charges that will destroy his life going forward. Even if he cleans his life up as an adult, this will haunt him forever, and according to the anti-gunners, it simply cannot happen.

After all, someone this age can’t buy guns lawfully, so there’s no way it should have been possible.

Unfortunately for them, theft is also illegal, but that didn’t stop someone from stealing those three guns (at minimum), and it didn’t seem to stop Wickert from hiding them behind a wall.

That’s because criminals don’t obey laws. It’s kind of in the job description.

Anti-gunners will keep claiming we need laws to stop people like Wickert (allegedly) from getting guns, but they never seem to acknowledge when those laws completely fail.

Weird.
