A police briefing in Madison, Wisconsin, turned into a disorderly scene after a protester took control of the microphone during an update about the fatal police shooting of Corey Durell Ruiz.

The disruption unfolded as city officials attempted to explain what investigators say happened during a violent confrontation that left one man dead and two officers injured.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson had begun addressing reporters and members of the public when demonstrators interrupted the event.

In an effort to calm tensions, Patterson said “I’ll step aside” and allowed one protester to speak before eventually resuming the briefing after the crowd quieted.

The protester immediately rejected the chief’s remarks, declaring, “We don’t want any of that talk.”

What followed was a lengthy speech condemning police, capitalism, imperialism and Zionism while accusing Patterson of participating in a system that allegedly oppressed the speaker’s family across generations.

Another demonstrator intensified the spectacle by displaying a sign reading, “Corrupt cops deserve to die too!!!”

The display came during a briefing intended to provide information about an active state investigation into the shooting.

According to Madison police, officers had responded Wednesday to reports of someone stealing bicycles and checking vehicle doors.

Investigators identified the suspect as thirty eight year old Corey Durell Ruiz, a homeless man with an extensive criminal record.

Police said Ruiz fled on a bicycle and rode through residential backyards while officers pursued him.

Authorities stated that officers eventually caught up with him after he either fell or was pulled from the bicycle, leading to a physical struggle in the middle of an intersection.

During that confrontation, police said Ruiz pulled out a fixed blade knife and injured one officer.

Authorities reported that officers first attempted to subdue him with a Taser, but those efforts failed before the wounded veteran officer fired his weapon.

A second officer also suffered injuries during the incident.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether that injury resulted from the knife or another aspect of the struggle.

Police said officers immediately attempted lifesaving measures before Ruiz was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Four officers were involved in or witnessed the shooting, and those directly involved have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Court records indicate Ruiz had accumulated a lengthy criminal history spanning nearly three decades.

The record included cases involving failure to pay child support, vehicle theft, bail jumping, threats against authorities, resisting an officer, theft, attempted invasion of privacy and cocaine possession.

Despite those details, city leaders emphasized accountability during the public briefing.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway said the incident would receive a rigorous investigation and argued that fatal encounters with law enforcement should not occur.

“It does not matter who you are or what your past is, you should not lose your life as a result of an encounter with law enforcement,” Rhodes Conway said, according to The Associated Press.

Madison Common Council President Sabrina Madison voiced even stronger criticism by questioning why officers involved in fatal shootings are not immediately detained.

“My first thought is, when the officer’s walking away, why isn’t he walking away in cuffs,” Madison said, according to the AP.

“I’m angry, there’s no way around it.”

Governor Tony Evers also called for transparency and accountability as investigators review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation is expected to examine the officers’ actions, the reported knife attack and the events leading to the deadly encounter.

The chaotic interruption highlighted the sharp divisions surrounding police use of force, even as authorities maintain that an officer had been wounded during the struggle.

For many watching, the briefing became less about official facts and more about the growing tension between activists and law enforcement in a city once again thrust into a heated national debate.
