Love him or hate him, LeBron James is still a needle-mover. At least in the sportsbooks and prediction markets.

After signing LeBron to a team-friendly two-year, $8 million deal, the Philadelphia 76ers are now the betting favorite in the Eastern Conference to win the 2027 championship at Kalshi.

I know the percentages can be confusing, so in American odds, the Sixers are +684 to win the title next season. They passed the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks, who are the second-betting favorite (+1240) out East as of 2 p.m. ET Friday, July 24.

LEBRON JAMES MAKES NBA FREE AGENCY DECISION, ANNOUNCES PLANS TO SIGN WITH 76ERS

This is the second huge move Philly has made this offseason, coming off the heels of trading Paul George to the Boston Celtics for 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.

Now, Philadelphia’s starting five includes LeBron, Brown, 2022-23 NBA MVP Joel Embiid, two-time All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, and SG V.J. Edgecombe, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting last season.

Ultimately, the question: Is this team good enough to win a title?

I mean, if the 76ers get insane injury luck in the playoffs, of course they can win a championship. Every team can. And in an NBA2K-sense: Sure. If you turn off injuries and control the players yourself.

Whether the personalities and playing styles mesh is another conversation. In fact, there’s a solid chance the 2026-27 Philadelphia 76ers will be a too many cooks in the kitchen type thing.

In theory, upgrading from PG to Brown, while adding LeBron to a Sixers squad that upset the Celtics in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs (which led Boston to spazz and make a franchise-altering trade), is a power move.

CELTICS AGREE TO SEND JAYLEN BROWN, 2024 FINALS MVP, TO 76ERS IN BLOCKBUSTER NBA TRADE: REPORT

Brown is a champion and five-time NBA All-Star who averaged career-bests in points, rebounds and assists last season. He is in his athletic prime and has never suffered a significant injury.

Again, love him or hate him, LeBron balled last season, his final with the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 20.9 points on 51.5% shooting with 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games.

Former Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James takes a spill vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder during the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Paycom Center.

But LeBron has always been ball-dominant, and I don’t see him changing much at 41, soon-to-be 42-years-old. Brown is an iso-scorer who likes to take defenders off the dribble and operates in the mid-range.

Philadelphia needs Embiid healthy and playing at 70% of his MVP-self to justify being the betting favorite in the East. However, Embiid always gets hurt, and he is a much worse defender than he was when in his prime.

Maxey actually led the 76ers in scoring last season despite Embiid having the highest usage rate on the team. Are we sure he’ll be okay with giving the ball up to LeBron and Brown?

Deferring isn’t the same as buying into a lesser role and still playing your a– off. It isn’t guaranteed that two or three All-Stars will be cool with being essentially role players, and you need “glue guys” to win a title.

That said, Philly should be second to New York as the betting favorite to win the East. The Knicks will have the same starting five in their title defense, all of whom are in their athletic primes. If they met in the playoffs, Jalen Brunson would be the best player on the floor.
