What a Debate Strategy at the Oxford Union: ‘I Could Have You Killed, But I Won’t,’ So Thank Me!

The Oxford Union held a debate on the proposition: “The West is Right to be Suspicious of Islam,” and the most notable thing about it was the fact that the host of the debate used the opportunity to make threats of violence against Tommy Robinson and Laurence Fox, arguing in favor alongside Jonathan Sacerdoti.

Arwa Hanin Elrayess is the President of the Oxford Union, and opposed the proposition, as you would expect given that she styles herself a “Palestinian Muslim,” and she was quite proud that she deigned to host Fox and Robinson.

The event took place in mid-June, and for some reason the Union did not post it until August first. Perhaps it is because of this:

Oxford Union debater Aisha Khan appeared to gloat as she told @TRobinsonNewEra that his safety at the Oxford Union was entirely dependent on the goodwill of Muslim students holding back a mob outside begging to kill him

She seems to love dangling the threat of violence in the…

The debate is over two hours, and I admit that I did not watch the whole thing yet, and may never do so because I expect that it would be extremely annoying given how pretentious and frankly offensive Elrayess comes off in the clips I have seen. If you think you can stand to watch it, be my guest:

For my purposes, everything you need to know to answer the question is summed up in that introductory 25 seconds. It was filled with insults and…actual threats of violence. She actually thinks that preening about her willingness to provide security forces to hold back a mob bent on violence proves her point that Muslims are no threat.

Quite the opposite, obviously. Elrayess is admitting that your safety only exists at the sufferance of people like her, and the guards she puts in place.

My full speech at the @OxfordUnion debating whether the west is right to be suspicious of Islam.

I needed a security team to attend and we were spat at, bullied and heckled by a baying mob.

But I will not give up on free speech.

I will not submit. pic.twitter.com/fgC7Xr963d

And the thing is, she’s not wrong. No doubt there WAS a mob of Islamists outside baying for blood, because we see it all the time, and Islamists are quite happy to tell you that unless you submit they intend to force you or kill you, and it will be at their whim whichever choice they happen to make.

The full debate was withheld until one of the speakers, Jonathan Sacerdoti, released his own speech that he recorded out of frustration with the Union’s unwillingness to post the entire debate.

He did that Friday, and the Oxford Union finally posted the entire version on Saturday. Coincidence?

More than six weeks after the Oxford Union promised to publish my June debate speech, the full video is still being withheld — while extracts of their own footage of the debate have appeared elsewhere, heavily edited.

More than six weeks after the Oxford Union promised to publish my June debate speech, the full video is still being withheld — while extracts of their own footage of the debate have appeared elsewhere, heavily edited.

I filmed my own speech with the Union’s knowledge and agreement as an insurance policy and backup. So I’m publishing it myself. They must release the entire debate.

Should the West be suspicious of Islam?

Probably not. The Union had been releasing clips they wanted people to see, and I guess they thought the cat was out of the bag and that they had gotten all the juice they could from curation. They had already leaked clips of the debate to a Muslim Brotherhood-linked publication anyway.

Regardless, you don’t need to see anything beyond that clip, which I understand is not the only one that suggested that violence could be visited on Fox and Robinson, although I can’t confirm that because…who cares? When the President of the Oxford Union’s opening gambit is “You only survive at my sufferage,” what more is there to be said?
