Bill Maher and John Mellencamp found unexpected common ground on President Donald Trump during a wide-ranging conversation that aired Monday on Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, even as the exchange exposed lingering discomfort with acknowledging Trump’s record, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Maher, who frequently describes himself as a classical liberal rather than a conservative, welcomed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mellencamp for an extended discussion that touched on politics, culture, and celebrity activism.

The conversation included criticism of the Democratic Party’s reliance on celebrity endorsements and evolved into a brief but notable acknowledgment of Trump’s support for American farmers.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The moment emerged as Mellencamp reflected on the founding of Farm Aid alongside Willie Nelson and Neil Young. Mellencamp recalled early optimism that public pressure through music could prompt lawmakers to assist small family farmers.

“You know, when we started Farm Aid, Willie [Nelson] and Neil [Young] and I, I think all of us were naive enough to think that if we do this show that the politicians will go, ‘These guys have a good point. We need to help the small family farmer,’” Mellencamp said.

“No, it’s going to take more than a f***ing concert. It’s going to take more than a march to get rid of –”

Maher interjected mid-thought with a pointed observation: “– Trump’s wrote a lot of checks to farmers.”

“Huh?” Mellencamp responded.

Maher reiterated the point, adding that Trump issued the payments in response to economic pressures farmers faced during tariff disputes.

Mellencamp did not dispute the statement but quickly shifted the discussion away from farm policy, returning instead to his work writing songs intended to encourage young farmers.

Later in the podcast, the two eventually returned to the topic of Trump through a personal anecdote. Mellencamp recounted meeting Trump years earlier at a Super Bowl event, long before Trump entered national politics.

“But he bought me popcorn,” Mellencamp recalled. “He bought me Coke. He couldn’t have been nicer.”

The conversation moved between personal recollections and broader political commentary, including a segment criticizing what both men described as the Democratic Party’s overdependence on celebrity culture.

That discussion stemmed from Maher’s refusal to wear anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement “Be Good” buttons during a previous Golden Globes appearance.

“It was so funny,” Maher said, referring to the backlash he received for laughing at the social justice pins.

“It was,” Mellencamp replied. “Because outside of this ball of people that live here, nobody gives a s***.”

Maher expanded on that criticism, arguing that celebrities often do more harm than good when attempting to influence voters.

“But that’s what I was saying,” Maher added.

“The Democrats, I mean — for people who didn’t see it — the point of it was, you’ve got to cut your celebrities loose. You think they’re helping, and they’re actually hurting, because people don’t see celebrities in any way like they can relate to their life, and they can’t in any way.”

The exchange highlighted a recurring theme throughout the episode: acknowledgment of Trump’s tangible policy actions paired with visible hesitation from left-leaning cultural figures to engage those topics directly.
