Prosecutors: Tyler Robinson Confessed at Least 11 Times in Writing

Last month, Tyler Robinson’s preliminary hearing gave us a better view of the evidence prosecutors have been assembling against him. On September 1, Judge Graf is set to hear arguments from the prosecutors and the defense and issue a ruling whether or not Robinson will be formally charged and the case will move forward to a trial.

At this point it’s a given that a trial will happen, but we still have to walk through all of the steps. In advance of that hearing next month, prosecutors submitted a 28-page memo basically saying that the evidence against Robinson was overwhelming.

“This isn’t a close case,” prosecutors said in a written argument to Judge Tony Graf.

The Utah County Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting the high-profile case, filed its written argument in the 4th District Court in Provo, saying prosecutors have shown that there is enough probable cause to warrant a trial.

“This is likely as straightforward a bind-over decision as this Court will ever see,” prosecutors said in their written argument filed with the court on Tuesday and reviewed by ABC News.

The document summarizes a lot of the evidence previously presented at trial. One of the most striking parts is where the prosecutors argue that Robinson confessed 11 separate times in writing.

Defendant repeatedly admitted that he shot Mr. Kirk using Defendant’sgrandfather’s rifle, including:

  • “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it.”
  • “I am [the one who did it], I’m sorry.”
  • “Why did I do it? …I had enough of his hatred. some hate can’t be negotiatedout.”
  • “if I am able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence. going to attemptto retrieve it again, hopefully they have moved on.I haven’t seen anything in thenews about them finding it.”
  • “[I have been planning this] a bit over a week I believe.”
  • “im wishing I had circled back and grabbed it as soon as I got to my vehicle, because it sounds like the policecouldn’t get in for a long while because of thetraffic.”
  • “remember how I was engraving bullets? the fuckin messages are mostly a bigmeme. if I see ‘notices bulge uwu’ on fox news I might have a stroke.”
  • “judging from today I’d say grandpas gun does just fine idk.”
  • “I’m going to turn myself in willingly.”
  • “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. it was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry forall of this. im surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments.”
  • “it was [me]. …look at the pictures from the surveillance footage. it was me. …im serious.”

What’s striking about this is that it doesn’t seem to include all of the verbal confessions he made to his parents and also to Lance Twiggs. Remember, Twiggs testified that Robinson confessed to him in person and said he regretted having done it. He also was suicidal when he spoke to his parents and essentially confessed he’d done it. They convinced him to turn himself in.

So the total number of confessions is probably at least 13 that we know about so far. And that’s even before you consider all the other visual and forensic evidence which shows that Robinson was there that day (several times in fact). He was seen driving his car. His DNA was found on the rifle, the towel, the screwdriver and the cartridges. Plus, the engraving setup and a test bullet were found at his house.

Add all of that up and there’s no doubt he’s going to trial. At this point the defense still has another week to submit their response and then oral arguments will take place on September 1, presumably summaries of the two memos. Judge Graf will “bind over” Robinson for trial and then a date will be set for his arraignment, at which point he’ll have to enter a plea and also Judge Graf could finally announce a date for the trial to begin. Court watchers seem to expect that date will be sometime next year.
