Minnesota Republican state Sen. Michael Holmstrom is putting a hard marker down in a state where the political class often treats basic assimilation as some kind of taboo subject, as reported by The Post Millennial.

Holmstrom, a first-term senator, announced the creation of a new anti-Sharia law caucus in the Minnesota State Senate, aimed at keeping the state court system firmly grounded in American constitutional law.

The launch date was not picked at random. Holmstrom chose August 1 because it marks the anniversary of the 1801 battle involving the U.S. Navy and Islamic Barbary pirates, who enslaved Americans and demanded payments from American ships.

For a country that once fought pirates to defend American citizens and commerce, the symbolism was not subtle. Holmstrom is making the case that America should not apologize for defending its legal system, its liberties, or its national identity.

“Around the world, governments have invoked Sharia law to justify atrocities,” Holmstrom said.

“Women have been denied equal rights, religious minorities have been persecuted, apostasy and blasphemy have been punished, child marriage and rape have been tolerated or justified, and in some places, slavery has been justified under the guise of religious authority.”

That is the sort of statement that makes the usual professional offense takers reach for the smelling salts. Still, it is also a blunt description of realities many Americans have watched unfold overseas while elites pretend the issue is merely a misunderstanding.

Holmstrom said such practices have no place in a state court system that is supposed to answer to the Constitution, not foreign religious codes or imported political doctrines.

“Those practices are fundamentally incompatible with the principles that define America: equal justice under the law, individual liberty, and the inherent dignity of every person,” he continued.

“Minnesotans had very little say in the importation of this third-world political ideology. We can, however, now ensure that our judicial system remains firmly rooted in American constitutional law.”

The senator also drew a bright line between religious liberty and a refusal to assimilate. He said he does not expect immigrants from Islamic nations to abandon their faith, but he does expect them to embrace the American constitutional order.

“Assimilation is not oppression. It is the foundation of a united nation. You do not strengthen America by importing the failures of the nation you left behind. Rather, you strengthen America by embracing our constitutional system that provides the values and freedoms we all share. That is the vision of this Sharia Free Minnesota Caucus.”

That argument is likely to resonate with voters who are tired of being told that national standards are somehow rude. America has long welcomed immigrants, but the bargain has always included loyalty to the Constitution and respect for the laws that protect everyone equally.

Members of the Minnesota caucus have not yet been publicly announced. Holmstrom told Alpha News that the board is still being organized and that more details will be shared later.

He said the caucus “will work to advance legislation that ensures Minnesota courts recognize one supreme legal authority, the Minnesota Constitution and the Constitution of the United States.”

That mission mirrors a national effort already underway in Congress. Rep. Chip Roy founded the Sharia Free American Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2025 to oppose any effort to embed Sharia law in American government.

“Under Sharia law, there is no freedom of speech, religion, or women’s rights. Europe should be a wake-up call to America, showing what the spread of Sharia law looks like,” Roy said in a December 2025 press release.

“America’s immigration system must brace to take on this battle, not only to preserve our constitutional republic but to take charge in the spiritual warfare and defend our Judeo-Christian values.”

Roy’s warning reflects a growing concern among conservatives who have watched European governments struggle with parallel legal expectations, failed integration, and rising pressure against free speech. The American left, naturally, tends to label these concerns as bigotry rather than answer the actual policy question.

Holmstrom’s caucus is entering that fight at the state level, where courts, schools, local governments, and communities often feel the pressure first. The debate is not about punishing faith, but about making sure no religious or foreign legal system outranks the Constitution.

For Minnesota voters who still believe equal justice means one law for everyone, the new caucus offers a clear message. America does not need imported legal failures dressed up as diversity, and Minnesota courts should never be confused about whose law comes first.
