School Shooting in Thailand Leaves Six Dead, 15 Injured

I really get sick of the claim that mass killings with a firearm only happen in the United States. That’s what the phrase “uniquely American” means when describing the phenomenon. To be fair, we do have more than most people, even if you account for population, but we are also a very different country than most.

Thailand, however, seems to also be having a bit of a problem. Despite acting to tighten gun restrictions after previous massacres, it doesn’t look like it did a whole lot of good.

Not today, at least, as six people are dead, 15 injured in an attack carried out at a school by a 14-year-old student.

Thailand School Shooting Live News: A normal school morning outside Bangkok turned into a scene of panic on Friday after gunfire sent students running from their classrooms and emergency teams rushing into Debsirin Nonthaburi School. A 14-year-old student opened fire at the school in Nonthaburi province, killing six people and injuring 15 others before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The teenager had also killed his grandparents at their home earlier in the morning.

The attack has shocked Thailand because it marks the country’s second school shooting of 2026. It has also renewed concerns about access to firearms in a country that has introduced tighter gun-control measures after several deadly shootings in recent years. Police said the weapon used in Friday’s attack belonged to the teenager’s grandfather.

Thailand School Shooting Live News: What Happened at Debsirin Nonthaburi School?

The shooting took place on Friday morning at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Police said the teenager first killed his grandparents at their home before going to the school. Once inside the campus, he opened fire, sending students and teachers into hiding.

The attack began at around 10 am local time. Police quickly moved to the school and asked students, teachers and members of the public to stay away from the area while officers dealt with the armed student.

Reuters reported that the teenager fired at least 26 rounds and that police found another 34 rounds of ammunition at the scene. Authorities said the firearm belonged to his grandfather.

The motive remains under investigation.

The killer is also dead, though it’s still unclear if he’s being counted among the dead.

This is…difficult for me. Not only have I lost someone I cared about in a massacre not unlike this, but my daughter is 14. I can’t imagine anyone her age being capable of something like this, even though I know intellectually that it happens. She’s interested in video games and killing monsters in a digital world, not massacring her family and classmates for some unknown reason.

It’s just hard for me to wrap my head around this.

What I do know, though, is that Thailand does have extensive gun control, and they’ve tightened those rules after previous shootings. This is what we’re told is the rational response. However, it clearly didn’t do any good. It didn’t stop this horrific event from happening.

Exactly what we’ve said would happen here if we followed the so-called rational response.

What we need is to figure out what the hell is wrong with these people so we can try and identify them before they get to the point of murder, then treat them so they can become productive members of society instead of whatever it is they’ve become.

Let’s just point out that the shooting in Twin Falls had half as many killed, and that’s because two men with guns stood up and took on the killer, something that most definitely wasn’t an option in a school in Thailand.
