Trans Fight Explodes as Michele Tafoya and Peggy Flanagan Battle for Minnesota Senate [WATCH]

Minnesota’s 2026 Senate race is set for a November showdown between Democratic nominee Peggy Flanagan and Republican nominee Michele Tafoya, with transgender policy, immigration, government fraud and the direction of the state emerging as major points of disagreement, as reported by The Post Millennial.

The candidates secured their nominations in Tuesday’s hard-fought primaries. They are competing for the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Tina Smith, who announced her retirement in February 2025, citing family obligations.

Tafoya, a former NBC sports reporter who spent more than a decade covering sports, enters the general election as an underdog in a state that has not elected a Republican to statewide office since former Gov. Tim Pawlenty won in 2006.

Minnesota has not elected a Republican senator since 2002, when former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman won a single term before narrowly losing to Democrat Al Franken by roughly 300 votes.

Tafoya has made government fraud a central issue of her campaign. Her campaign website prominently features the phrase “Stop the Fraud” and argues that Minnesota politicians have failed to protect taxpayers from widespread fraud.

“The status quo politicians let criminals steal billions of dollars of Minnesota taxpayers’ hard-earned money,” her website states.

“They let fraudsters rob us blind rather than ask basic questions that might have seemed politically incorrect. We need to clean up our state and lead the way toward a nationwide anti-fraud agenda.”

Tafoya has promised to deport immigrants convicted of fraud and supports tougher penalties for people who defraud the government and Minnesota taxpayers.

The Republican has also positioned herself prominently in the debate over biological sex and women’s sports.

She praised basketball player Sophie Cunningham while criticizing what she described as increased activism within the WNBA.

“I’m losing faith in this league,” Tafoya told Fox News’ Dan Dakich.

“I have talked about this when this league had its inaugural first three, four seasons. I was one of the three play-by-play voices. It was Robin Roberts, Hannah Storm, and myself, and I worked with Reggie Miller, and we had a blast. And it was a celebration of these women. This league has now somehow morphed into something that feels like activism on display.”

Flanagan, the former Minnesota lieutenant governor, defeated moderate Democratic Rep. Angie Craig in the primary and has emphasized opposition to President Donald Trump and economic issues.

“Trump is seriously threatening our democracy, and Democrats’ focus cannot be to simply make life only a little less lousy for folks,” her campaign website states.

“We must recognize that this is not normal and stand together. We’ve got to fight for more.”

“I’m focused on building a fair economy that gives people the opportunity to afford the lives they want to live — for themselves and their families.”

Immigration is another major dividing line. Flanagan’s campaign says she believes Immigration and Customs Enforcement is “out of control” and calls for dismantling the agency while restructuring the immigration system around what it describes as dignity, safety, and due process.

Flanagan has received endorsements from Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, placing her alongside prominent figures on the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

The candidates also differ sharply on transgender issues, particularly policies affecting minors. Flanagan went viral after describing gender-affirming care for minors as life-saving and life-affirming.

“When our children tell us who they are, it is our job as grownups to listen and to believe them. That’s what it means to be a good parent,” she said.

Tafoya has taken a different position on transgender participation in women’s sports, making the issue part of her broader campaign focus on sex-based policies and women’s athletics.

Flanagan has also criticized Trump over his comments concerning Minnesota’s Somali community. In a video recorded from her car, she defended Somali Minnesotans.

“I just watched the video of Donald Trump attacking the beautiful Somali community that calls Minnesota home,” she said.

“They are part of the fabric of our state. These are teachers and nurses and neighbors and the mayor and our friends. And we are going to stand shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors.

Her remarks came as Minnesota faced scrutiny over multiple alleged fraud schemes. Prosecutors have charged nearly 100 people in cases involving programs related to child nutrition, daycare, autism services and other government-funded programs.

The overwhelming majority of those charged were of Somali descent.

The Feeding Our Future case alone involved approximately $250 million in allegedly fraudulent meal claims.

Federal estimates have suggested that half or more of the $18 billion spent through 14 Minnesota programs since 2018 could have been stolen.

The competing approaches give Minnesota voters a clear choice on several major issues heading into November.

Tafoya is emphasizing fraud, government accountability, immigration enforcement and sex-based policies, while Flanagan is campaigning on opposition to Trump, economic issues, immigration reform and transgender rights.

The general election will determine who succeeds Smith and whether Republicans can overcome Minnesota’s long-standing statewide electoral advantage for Democrats.
