William Shatner and His Daughter Reveal They Fought Stage 4 Cancer Together and Survived [WATCH]

William Shatner and his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch have revealed that they both faced stage 4 cancer at the same time and are now cancer-free, as reported by Page Six.

In a new interview with People, the 95-year-old actor and his 61-year-old daughter shared how their simultaneous battles unfolded and how they supported each other through it all.

Melanie said she learned she had stage 4 cancer in 2022 after finding a lump in her breast.

She underwent several rounds of chemotherapy, HER2-targeted therapies, a double mastectomy, and 30 radiation treatments.

She explained that despite her grueling treatment schedule, she was more worried about her father’s health than her own.

“I remember vividly thinking, ‘I don’t have the strength to take care of myself and lose my father at the same time,’” Melanie told People.

William recalled that near the end of Melanie’s treatment, he discovered a lump on his cheek.

Doctors later determined it was a tumor that had spread to his lungs and brain, confirming a diagnosis of stage 4 melanoma.

The “Star Trek” legend underwent surgery to remove the tumor and completed two years of immunotherapy aimed at eradicating the remaining cancer cells.

“We got the perfect doctors for her cancer and my cancer,” William said, grateful for the medical teams that guided both of their recoveries.

Melanie credited her father with keeping up his work and daily routines despite his diagnosis.

She said he “wouldn’t stop his life” and “kept working and moving forward,” even while undergoing treatment.

She also shared how she and her husband, Joel Gretsch, made sure to keep her father company whenever possible.

“Whenever he was home, Joel and I would bring dinner to him and watch movies, just always made sure that he’s not alone,” she said.

Beyond emotional support, William also helped ease his daughter’s financial concerns over her medical care. Melanie recalled him telling her, “I do not want you to worry. Just send me the bills.”

She laughed as she remembered a later conversation after she continued treatment for another year. “You said, ‘You’ve got to get well. We’re going to be in the poorhouse!’” she joked.

Now that both have recovered, the father-daughter duo is channeling their experiences into a new podcast titled “No Time but Now.”

The show will feature conversations with health experts and cancer survivors, focusing on hope, resilience, and meaning after illness.

“It’s easy for us in this lovely home to say, ‘Make your life meaningful,’” William told the magazine.

“It’s much more difficult to be poverty-stricken and wonder how you’re going to get through it. I’ve been there. But it’s also possible to endure that and be aware of the beauty around you.”

For Melanie, surviving cancer has changed her outlook. “[Overcoming cancer] changed my life. I’m not so afraid anymore, and there’s so much freedom and joy,” she shared.

William, who first publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis in 2023, reflected on mortality in a separate interview with TV Insider. “I’m always asking questions, because the older I get, the more fearful I will be to die with a question on my mind, like, ‘What about…,’” he said.

He added his trademark wit to the philosophical reflection:

“What’s the meaning of life?! Damn; the meaning of life is — and boom! I’m dead! It’s the fear of not knowing what you could have learned.”

In another conversation with Hello! magazine, he explained that his motivation now is to stay alive and present. “

I want to stay healthy and functioning, and I’d like to pass away in my sleep because…I have people I love, my family, my dogs,” he said.

Both Shatners’ shared story is one of endurance, love, and perspective, showing how they navigated simultaneous diagnoses and emerged grateful for the second chance they received.
