Even in a state as soft on crime as California, it takes some effort to rack up nine felony convictions before your 30th birthday. So kudos to Christopher Fuimaono for that dubious achievement, I guess.
The 28-year-old is now in line for his 10th felony conviction, which I think gets you a free sub sandwich at the San Quentin commissary. Fuimaono is facing charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and this time around he’ll be dealing with federal prosecutors and judges. From a DOJ press release:
Christopher Haden Fuimaono, 28, of Vallejo, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Fuimaono was arrested by Solano County Sheriff’s Deputies on August 1, 2026, pursuant to several outstanding felony arrest warrants. According to court documents, Fuimaono initially fled on foot and discarded a firearm during the chase. Deputies arrested Fuimaono and recovered the discarded firearm, which was loaded with one bullet in the chamber and another 10 in an inserted magazine. As a felon, Fuimaono is prohibited from possessing a firearm. Fuimaono’s nine prior felony convictions include three prior state felon in possession convictions.
As restrictive as California gun laws are for folks trying to lawfully exercise their Second Amendment rights, they’re awfully lenient on convicted felons illegally arming themselves. A felon-in-possession conviction comes with a maximum base sentence of just three years sentence, and with time off for good behavior that often ends up closer to 18 months behind bars. California’s three-strikes law, which can apply a 25-year sentence to repeat offenders, can be used when that third strike involves a felon-in-possession charge, but only if two other convictions qualify as “serious” or “violent” felonies.
The DOJ didn’t elaborate on what Fuimaono’s other six convictions entailed, but it’s pretty clear that the three-strikes policy wasn’t applied to him. Honestly, it really shouldn’t matter. Three prior convictions for the very offense he’s now accused of committing once again should have been enough to convince anyone, including California lawmakers, that their approach isn’t working.
Those legislators have spent years placing new restrictions on lawful gun owners in the name of public safety. They’ve imposed background checks on ammunition purchases, banned commonly owned firearms and magazines, expanded “sensitive places” where concealed carry is prohibited, and continue to push new licensing requirements for both gun owners and gun dealers. Yet none of those laws deter someone like Fuimaono, who has now allegedly ignored three prior felony convictions for illegally possessing a firearm.
If prosecutors couldn’t convince him to obey the law after his first conviction, or his second, or even his third conviction for the exact same offense, it’s hard to argue the answer is another restriction on people who have never committed a crime. At some point, even the legislators who are most hostile to our Second Amendment rights have to acknowledge that the problem isn’t a lack of gun laws. It’s a lack of meaningful consequences for repeatedly violating the ones already on the books.
Maybe this federal prosecution will finally accomplish what California’s revolving-door justice system apparently could not. If nothing else, a longer federal sentence would at least keep Fuimaono from illegally carrying another gun for a few years, which is more than can be said for all of California’s efforts.
