Yes, It Matters Who You Embrace and Campaign With

Hasan Piker is featured in this post, so I include the obligatory “NSFW” warning. 

As Ed wrote yesterday in his VIP post, Democrats—at least a few of them, and the number is growing as the polls tell these spineless cowards to do so — are running away from Hasan Piker. 

Needless to say, any sane person and I are underwhelmed because they are only doing so in response to the polls, just as happened with the full-throated support of Graham Platner until his campaign proved to be a liability. 

They aren’t running away from Piker because he is an evil, hateful man who wants to see blood running in the streets; they are doing so after they discovered that this was not a sentiment shared by most of the American people, and embracing it could harm their chances of winning elections. 

Granted, there are Democrats like John Fetterman who stood up to the crowd as they cheered Piker on, but they were few and far between. Instead, we got lectures about “Big Tents” and “reaching voters where they are at,” and lots of excuses for embracing and campaigning with a guy who thinks that Mao was a great man. 

A couple of weeks ago, it took a bit of courage to stand up to the crowd and say that the Emperor not only had no clothes, but that he was a murderous arsehole who wanted us all dead. Now that it’s no longer popular to say such things outside polite circles, a bandwagon effect is building.

Now, I happen to believe politicians really shouldn’t be held responsible for every person who supports them; it’s a cheap shot to call a politician a bad person just because this guy or gal is voting for him. 

How does one control that? Nick Fuentes has, at various times, said he supported Trump, and at others said he is all-in on the Democrats. Now, I am all for the sentiment “a pox on both your houses” when appropriate, but it’s stupid to claim a politician is good or bad based on who votes for them. 

On the other hand, you most certainly can and should hold a politician responsible for who they embrace and campaign with, and obviously for what they say and do. And an awful lot of Democrats are cozying up with Hasan Piker, the DSA, avowed communists, Antifa radicals, trans activists, and a whole host of malcontents who want to destroy America and openly say so.

Abdul El-Sayed is trying to distance himself from Piker now that the primary is over and he got what he wanted from him, but what he wanted from him was the support of communists and Islamists, whom he believes are “his” kind of people. He chose them, not the other way around. 

It’s revisionist history to argue otherwise, although revisionist history is what the left specializes in, as well as Pravda.

Remember PolitiFact’s ruling that Mamdani was not a communist? They made that determination based not on the totality of the evidence, but on the fact that he didn’t explicitly say so in his platform, as if reality is trumped by the latest words people say to persuade you. 

Sure, Mamdani wants to “seize the means of production,” but it’s not on his website. How compelling.

The reason why it’s reasonable to hold Democrats accountable for what Hasan Piker has been saying is that they embraced Hasan Piker and explicitly said they wanted his supporters to support them. They associated themselves with him and his followers.

Suddenly everybody who cozied up to Piker is saying, “Let’s not talk about him,” solely because talking about him is bad for business. 

Tim Miler, who has defended Hasan Piker for months (he also LOVED Graham Platner), is still trying to distinguish Piker from the people who rushed to his side to get his support.

It is, as Walker said, insanely dishonest. But also par for the course. 

Back in 2006, George Allen dropped the word “macaca” to describe a man who followed him from event to event to harass him. For the next 88 days, Allen and just about every Republican running that year were asked endless questions about a word that nobody could actually define, but that sounded vaguely insulting.

Hasan Piker: “I do mean it.”

Democrats around the country can campaign with and defend a man who threatens Jews with violence if they support Israel, talks about eviscerating people, and loves terrorists, and they think it is unfair to point this out. 

Favreau and his friends gleefully promoted Piker over and over. Now they’re mad anyone is talking about him.

If Hasan Piker were just blowing smoke on his podcast and Democrats avoided him like the plague, it would be a bit of a cheap shot to keep bringing him up. An expected one in politics, of course, but it really doesn’t tell you much other than Piker sees some overlap with their views, likely on Israel. 

But that is not what has happened. Politicians sought him out, went on his podcast, defended him, had their allies defend him, and explicitly campaigned for the votes of his truly evil supporters. 

Same with everybody who cozied up to Graham Platner, or who is willing to appear with Jay Jones. If a Republican brought a KKK member up to campaign with him, it would be front-page news for weeks. 

Same here. They chose this. They own it. They own Mamdani. They own Platner. They own Jay Jones.
