Arizona Democrats are reportedly promoting a happy hour with an admission gimmick that is drawing scrutiny for all the wrong reasons.

The advertised “special password” is “8647,” a number sequence that critics can reasonably interpret as political shorthand aimed at President Donald Trump.

The event directions add another layer of secrecy to the gathering.

The message states, “Enter through the Coffee house or through the unmarked door in the alley. Special Password 8647.”

An unmarked alley entrance and a coded password might sound like marketing for a basement speakeasy.

When a political organization uses a number that appears to combine “86” with “47,” however, the stunt begins looking considerably less clever.

Why are the Greater Democrats of Tucson and LD 20 Democrats using 86 47 as their passcode for this event? Why is the left encouraging the assassination of political opponents?

The term “86” has long been used as slang for removing, ejecting, or getting rid of someone.

Trump, now serving as the 47th president, is commonly identified by supporters and opponents alike with the number 47.

Put those numbers together, and the obvious interpretation is not difficult to spot.

At the very least, Arizona Democrats selected language that invites questions about whether the password was meant as a hostile reference to the sitting president.

No additional context in the supplied event language explains the choice.

There is no harmless punchline, mathematical reference, or innocent meaning offered to prevent attendees and the public from reading “8647” as “86 47.”

That omission matters because political rhetoric does not exist in a vacuum.

Trump has faced repeated threats and assassination attempts, making cute little coded references about getting rid of number 47 reckless even if organizers insist it was only a joke.

Democrats and their media allies routinely lecture conservatives about dangerous language, heated rhetoric, and the supposed consequences of political messaging.

Yet when the questionable message comes from their own side, the usual outrage machine often develops a sudden and remarkably convenient case of laryngitis.

The standard defense will likely be that critics are reading too much into four digits.

That explanation becomes harder to swallow when those digits are deliberately presented as a “special password” for entry into a partisan political event.

Passwords are chosen for a reason, particularly when they are featured as part of an event promotion.

Organizers could have selected almost any word or number, but they landed on one that can readily be understood as a reference to removing the 47th president.

Nobody needs to invent facts that are not present in the invitation.

The published language speaks loudly enough, and Arizona Democrats should explain who selected the code, what it was intended to mean, and why organizers believed it was appropriate.

If Republicans advertised a private gathering through an alley entrance using a password that appeared to target a Democratic president, national reporters would not shrug.

Cable panels would convene immediately, solemn warnings would follow, and demands for denunciations would consume the news cycle.

The issue is not whether Democrats are permitted to hold a happy hour or use a password.

The issue is why a political group would embrace symbolism that predictably looks like a wink toward eliminating Trump, especially amid an already volatile national climate.

Political operatives often hide behind ambiguity because it gives them room to provoke supporters and deny responsibility later.

They get the thrill of the message while keeping an escape hatch ready for anyone who notices what they are doing.

Arizona Democrats can clear up the controversy by giving a direct answer instead of relying on silence or partisan spin.

Until then, the combination of the alley entrance, the secrecy, and the “8647” password will continue to look less like harmless fun and more like an ugly political message dressed up as happy hour.
