Vice President JD Vance drew a strong reaction from the crowd at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas on Thursday after responding to a protester who interrupted his primetime speech while carrying Mexican and Palestinian flags, as reported by Fox News.

The incident occurred during Vance’s keynote address at the American Airlines Center on Sept. 10, as Republicans gathered for the second day of the party’s 2026 midterm convention.

The protester’s interruption was not captured by the convention’s official television feed, but Vance described what happened to the audience watching his remarks.

“What the people at home missed is that we just had a protester interrupting us and waving the Mexican flag.”

Vance then directly addressed the protester.

“Well, my friend, if you love Mexico so much, get your a– over there. I’ll buy you the plane ticket,” the vice president said.

The remark prompted a loud response from the crowd, which began chanting “USA” as the protester was escorted from the area, according to Fox News.

Vance continued his speech without dwelling on the interruption. He told attendees that he had prepared an entirely different address but decided to change course following the protest.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I had a whole speech written. But I think I’ve got to change it because we just discovered the symbol of the far left — an idiot waving … a Mexican flag at a protest when he should be waving the flag of the United States of America.”

He then shifted the focus to what he described as the importance of the American flag and the country’s political future.

“Now, we all know, of course, that as much as that person might wave around a foreign flag, he’d much rather live in Dallas, or in Cincinnati, or in any one of our great cities than Mexico,” Vance said.

“But while we wave the American flag and fight for the American dream, we have to remind ourselves tonight that the good life that is the foundation of this country’s promise is not guaranteed.”

“Every generation of Americans has had to fight for these things when it’s our turn,” he continued.

Vance went on to criticize Democratic candidates heading into the November midterm elections.

“And this fall, the Democrats are running candidates who will tell your children what they’re allowed to say, how they’re allowed to live, and importantly, who they ought to hate, because that’s what the Democrat Party is about in 2026,” Vance said.

“It’s not about you, it’s about foreign fraudsters, and it’s about who they hate. And we got to send their a—-s back in November.”

The confrontation quickly spread across social media, where conservative commentators and activists reacted to the exchange.

Eric Daugherty described the response as a “MIC DROP” moment and wrote, “TOTAL PANDEMONIUM.”

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson called Vance’s response an “epic response,” while activist Scott Presler praised the vice president for reacting “without missing a beat” and described the exchange as “an iconic moment.”

Students for Trump co-founder Ryan Fournier also reacted to the exchange, writing, “JD Vance just absolute [sic] WIPED THE FLOOR with a leftist heckler who interrupted his rally waving a Mexican flag.”

“The crowd went completely WILD. Unbelievable energy,” Fournier added.

Commentator Brilyn Hollyhand offered a shorter reaction, posting, “Yeah, JD for President after this.”

The episode comes as Republicans at the Dallas convention have increasingly discussed the party’s eventual leadership beyond President Donald Trump.

Trump cannot seek a third presidential term under the 22nd Amendment, making the question of who could lead the Republican Party in 2028 a subject of discussion even though the next presidential election remains more than two years away.

Vance has emerged as one of several Republicans frequently mentioned in conversations about the party’s future. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have also been discussed by Republicans looking beyond the Trump presidency.

The Dallas convention did not establish a Republican nominee or settle the party’s 2028 field.

Reuters reported that Vance’s speech generated chants of “48,” a reference to the possibility of a Vance presidential campaign, while Trump praised his vice president’s performance without endorsing anyone for 2028.

Vance’s remarks also came during a convention heavily centered on Trump and the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump has urged Republican voters to treat the 2026 elections as a referendum on his presidency, while the party has sought to maintain control of Congress.
