Michigan state Rep. Bill G. Schuette is warning voters not to be fooled by Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El Sayed’s rejection of the socialist label.

Schuette argues that the candidate’s policy agenda reveals far more than his campaign’s carefully polished denials, as reported by Fox News.

El Sayed, a former public health official, narrowly defeated establishment favorite Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary.

Gold. Upgraded. Buy real gold from $1. Store it in America. Sell it with one click.

The upset handed another victory to the party’s aggressive progressive wing and raised fresh questions about how far Democrats have drifted from ordinary Michigan voters.

His nomination follows primary victories by candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America in New York, Florida, and Colorado.

That growing pattern has left Democratic leaders facing an inconvenient reality as socialist activists gain influence over candidates, policy priorities, and campaign messaging.

El Sayed has resisted being labeled a socialist, even as he receives support from prominent DSA members and allies.

His political backers include Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and fellow Michigan Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

The nominee previously told CBS News that he wants to assemble a “broad coalition” including supporters of President Donald Trump and DSA members.

He insisted that he does not “do ideology” and instead favors “solutions that solve problems.”

El Sayed also told CNN, “I believe in capitalism, I just believe that capitalism has to be regulated.”

That may sound reassuring on television, but Schuette says the actual platform resembles the same socialist playbook voters have watched spread through the Democratic Party.

Schuette described El Sayed’s primary victory as evidence that Democrats have “jumped the shark.”

In his view, the party has wandered into an ideological wilderness that conflicts with Michigan values and the broader American tradition of individual liberty.

The Republican lawmaker said his central concern is that El Sayed wants to place Michigan on “a completely different track.”

He argued that the nominee’s policies are “at really sharp odds with the way you can start a business, start a family and live your life in Michigan.”

Among El Sayed’s stated priorities are abolishing United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, establishing Medicare for All, taxing billionaire wealth, and ending American military aid to Israel.

That is hardly a modest reform package, no matter how many times campaign consultants repaint it as practical problem solving.

Schuette said affordability will remain a decisive concern as voters approach the November elections.

He contrasted El Sayed’s platform with the “spirit of America,” which he described as rooted in entrepreneurship, ingenuity, and hard work rather than expanding government control.

“The spirit of America is about entrepreneurship and American ingenuity, hard work,” Schuette said. “Those are the types of policies that Abdul El-Sayed would work directly against.”

Schuette also criticized El Sayed’s association with streamer Hasan Piker, who has millions of followers across social media and once said: “America deserved 9/11.”

Piker endorsed the Democratic nominee and appeared at multiple campaign events, creating another political headache that Democrats cannot simply wave away.

El Sayed later distanced himself from Piker following the streamer’s comments about Jewish Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss.

Piker reacted to a viral audio clip involving Moss by saying, “If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews.”

“I want to be crystal clear, nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople,” El Sayed said in a statement responding to Piker. The statement came only after the controversy erupted, leaving voters to judge the company the campaign had already welcomed.

Schuette further pointed to resurfaced remarks in which El Sayed said he “hates” Mackinac Island and connected football with “toxic masculinity.”

For a candidate seeking to represent Michigan, taking shots at an iconic state destination and one of America’s favorite sports is certainly an unusual sales pitch.

The Republican predicted that Michigan voters will reject socialism and support “an idea that looks for ways to give the American people more freedom and opportunity and more of their own money back in their own wallets.”

He added, “I’m confident the people in Michigan will choose that.”

El Sayed will face Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers in the contest to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.

With control of the Senate potentially hanging in the balance, Michigan voters will decide whether radical progressive promises are merely campaign branding or a warning worth taking seriously.
