A recent Oprah program examining the Lindsay Clancy case has sparked criticism over arguments that race, gender and privilege should factor into the public response to women accused of killing their children.

Clancy has claimed postpartum psychosis in connection with the deaths of her children, prompting debate over mental illness, criminal responsibility and sympathy for defendants in such cases.

Critics of that response argue that mental illness should not automatically excuse allegations involving planned actions, efforts to conceal what happened and an apparent suicide attempt.

The controversy has expanded beyond the Clancy case following another case involving Corie Walsh of Frankfort, Illinois.

Prosecutors say Walsh allegedly strangled her 2-year-old son while believing the child was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.”

Walsh had reportedly been closely following the Clancy trial and discussing the case with friends just hours before her son was found dead.

The timing prompted questions about whether the attention surrounding Clancy’s case could influence others, although no direct connection between the cases has been established.

The broader debate intensified following Oprah’s program about Clancy, where participants discussed not only postpartum mental illness but also disparities in how women accused of similar crimes receive public attention and sympathy.

One woman on the program argued that the sympathy directed toward Clancy should also be extended to defendants who do not share her racial and socioeconomic background.

“I want us to have the same passion for people who don’t look like Lindsay, who don’t have her same access… who don’t have her same access and education, her melanin, her privilege,” she said.

She continued by arguing that women of color imprisoned for similar crimes have not received comparable public attention.

“There are women of color sitting around this country in prisons for this same thing that we’ve never heard of. And I just want to remind us to have the pink shirts and the energy for them as well.”

Those remarks brought identity politics directly into an already contentious debate over criminal responsibility.

Critics argue that applying racial and gender categories to defendants accused of killing children risks shifting attention away from the victims and toward determining which defendants qualify for greater public sympathy.

The criticism also focuses on what the original commentary describes as an increasingly expansive view of victimhood.

Under that view, critics contend, someone accused of committing an extreme crime can simultaneously be portrayed as a victim based on race, gender, mental health, or other characteristics.

The Clancy debate has become part of a larger argument over what critics describe as the evolution of “Woke” politics.

The commentary labels the latest development “Woke 2,” arguing that the movement has progressed from debates over language and social norms toward questions involving personal responsibility and morality.

“This isn’t suicidal empathy anymore. This is homicidal empathy,” the commentary argues.

The cases involving Clancy and Walsh have become central examples in that criticism because both involve mothers accused of killing their own children and questions surrounding their mental states.

The discussion surrounding the Oprah program added another dimension by asking whether race and privilege affect which defendants receive sympathy.

The woman’s comments specifically called for the same level of support for incarcerated women of color that she believes Clancy has received.

Critics of that position argue that the central question should remain responsibility for the deaths of children rather than the demographic characteristics of the accused.

They contend that identity-based arguments can create a framework in which defendants continue to be presented primarily as victims even when they are accused of killing those most dependent upon them.

The original commentary describes that development as the logical endpoint of identity politics, arguing that categories traditionally used to describe social disadvantage are now being applied even in cases involving allegations of the most serious crimes.

The debate leaves two competing questions at the center of the controversy: how mental illness should affect responsibility for criminal acts, and whether race or socioeconomic status should influence the amount of sympathy defendants receive.

For critics of the response to the Clancy case, however, the concern extends beyond any single prosecution.

They argue that a political culture increasingly focused on identity and victimhood is creating a distorted understanding of individual responsibility, with the debate over women accused of killing their children representing an extreme example of where that approach can lead.
