Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani triggered fierce criticism after cameras captured them smiling and apparently laughing during the solemn September 11 memorial ceremony in Lower Manhattan.

The moment unfolded while mourners were reading the names of Americans murdered in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The television feed had just shown a young man sobbing near the memorial when it switched to Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani speaking with broad smiles.

Their conversation could not be heard, leaving viewers to judge the scene by its unmistakably jarring appearance.

Mamdani was already facing anger from some victims’ families over his decision to attend the ceremony.

A petition reportedly carrying more than 110,000 signatures had urged him to stay away, making the televised moment even more combustible.

This Could Be the Most Important Video Gun Owners Watch All Year

Steve Guest, a former senior staffer for Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, delivered a blunt assessment.

“Disgraceful,” Guest wrote before adding, “AOC and Mamdani look happy.”

Other social media users expressed similar disgust as the video circulated.

“They always show us who they really are,” one critic wrote, capturing the reaction of Americans who believed the setting demanded complete restraint and reverence.

The Pittsburgh Republican Committee suggested the scene demonstrated why grieving families had opposed Mamdani’s presence.

Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt was even sharper, writing, “While normal Americans cry, commie Mamdani and AOC laugh it up at the 9/11 memorial in New York.”

Pratt continued with an accusation aimed directly at the two progressive politicians.

“They hate you. They hate your country. They enjoy your misery. We cannot allow these people to have power.”

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov also condemned what viewers saw.

“After thousands of families of victims of terror beg Mamdani not to show up, he stands there and laughs while families weep,” Vernikov said, adding, “This is NYC’s Mayor.”

Republican Florida Rep. Randy Fine argued that neither Mamdani nor Ocasio Cortez belonged near Ground Zero.

“They do not mourn this country, they mock it,” Fine wrote before demanding, “Have some damn respect.”

Texas Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt emphasized that Ground Zero is not just another stop on the political calendar.

“There is a time and a place for politics. This isn’t it. Ground Zero is sacred ground.”

Hunt also rejected any attempt to treat the annual remembrance like a routine public appearance.

“September 11 is not a photo op, it is not a networking event,” he said, drawing a line that should be obvious to anyone holding elected office.

Former Trump White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson focused on the basic question raised by the footage.

“What exactly is funny?” she asked, as critics continued sharing the abrupt transition from a grieving mourner to the smiling politicians.

There was, however, a defense from Michael Ragusa, who reportedly served as security chief for former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

“The videos of [them] laughing are not true. I was standing next to them the whole time,” Ragusa wrote.

Ragusa claimed the camera captured an ordinary greeting rather than mockery of the ceremony.

“The camera just caught her greeting him hello. Multiple other politicians were laughing and joking behind me. Republicans and Democrats.”

Mamdani was also seen at other moments standing solemnly between New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and New York first gentleman William Hochul Jr.

Still, political leaders should understand that appearances matter, especially on sacred ground where thousands of families continue carrying wounds that never fully heal.

The contents of the conversation between Mamdani and Ocasio Cortez remained unknown, and the footage alone did not establish what prompted their expressions.

Yet at a ceremony defined by loss, sacrifice, and national memory, elected officials should have enough awareness to avoid creating such disgraceful optics in the first place.
