Amy Acton’s campaign team scrambled to shield the Ohio Democrat after a cameraman confronted her about refusing to debate Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy.

The tense encounter unfolded Saturday during an Acton campaign event in Harrison, Ohio.

Acton, the former director of the Ohio Department of Health, was walking through the event when a Republican political activist approached with a camera.

He asked the question her campaign apparently would rather avoid as the general election draws closer.

“Dr. Amy Acton, why do you refuse to debate your opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy?” the cameraman asked.

Acton did not stop to make her case, choosing instead to continue walking while campaign personnel moved between her and the camera.

Staff members repeatedly declared that photos, videos, and interviews were not permitted.

The response looked less like a confident campaign defending its candidate and more like a frantic effort to keep an inconvenient question safely out of view.

The confrontation became physical enough to jolt the camera out of frame.

The cameraman warned staff members to be “careful” as they pressed toward him and attempted to block his access to Acton.

The video is likely to provide fresh ammunition for Ramaswamy and his supporters.

They have argued that Acton has failed to offer Ohio voters a convincing explanation for avoiding a debate during the closing stretch of the campaign.

Earlier this month, Ramaswamy accepted an invitation from CNN to debate.

Acton rejected the invitation, with her campaign insisting that appearing beside the Republican would improperly elevate someone it considers dishonest and unworthy of a public forum.

“Dr. Acton’s focus is on talking with Ohioans, not platforming a scam artist who spreads baseless lies about her and her family, uses AI to falsely paint her as someone with a substance abuse problem, and shames Dr. Acton for being sexually abused as a child while Vivek stands with predators and abusers,” a campaign spokesperson said in a Sept. 2 statement.

That statement referred to several lines of Republican criticism involving Acton’s record and personal history.

Those attacks include her role in Ohio’s COVID response and a 2019 verbal domestic dispute that occurred while she was intoxicated.

Republican campaign material has also used AI-generated imagery that altered the license plate on Acton’s vehicle to read “drunk mom.”

Her campaign has condemned the imagery as a false and degrading portrayal designed to smear her personally.

The reference to predators and abusers also appeared aimed at Ramaswamy’s initial reluctance to emphasize the release of files connected to Jeffrey Epstein.

Ramaswamy did not engage with that accusation when responding to Acton’s refusal to debate.

Instead, the Republican focused squarely on whether Acton possesses the judgment and confidence needed to serve as Ohio’s chief executive.

His argument was simple: Someone asking voters to run the state should be willing to defend her record before those same voters.

“It’s too bad for Ohio voters that Acton won’t take voter questions, won’t debate, quit after failing as Ohio’s health director, and has some serious issues now surfaced in multiple police reports,” Ramaswamy said in a post to social media.

WATCH:

The Harrison video adds a visual dimension to that criticism.

Rather than watching Acton answer a direct question, voters saw campaign personnel close ranks, block the camera, and escort their candidate away from scrutiny.

That silence leaves the campaign with the same problem it had before the camera started rolling, namely explaining why its candidate will not debate.

Acton secured the Democratic nomination and will face Ramaswamy in Ohio’s general election on Nov. 3.

Until then, every avoided question and blocked camera will reinforce the Republican charge that Acton wants the governor’s office without enduring the public examination that comes with seeking it.
