North Carolina Democrats have withdrawn support from a state House candidate after social media posts surfaced in which she appeared to celebrate the deaths of MAGA supporters and contemplate foreign attacks against Republican states.

Shelly Headen is challenging Republican state Rep. John Blust for a seat in the North Carolina House.

Her candidacy became politically radioactive after several reported posts revealed rhetoric far beyond the usual partisan mudslinging.

The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus announced that it would no longer support Headen.

A caucus spokesperson told The Assembly that the candidate’s comments were “unacceptable and do not reflect the values we expect of our candidates.”

“The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus condemns these comments without qualification and will not support Shelly Headen’s candidacy,” the spokesperson said.

That is unusually direct language from a political organization trying to put distance between itself and one of its own candidates.

The controversy centers on multiple alleged social media posts attributed to Headen.

One appeared after then Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 2024, a moment that apparently inspired more rage than unity.

“I’m so excited! Ready for the MAGAs to die off!!” Headen wrote.

Celebrating the imagined deaths of millions of Americans is apparently one way to demonstrate all that tolerance and compassion Democrats routinely claim to possess.

Another reported post went even further by appearing to welcome an attack on American soil.

Rather than expressing concern for the country, Headen allegedly suggested that Republican leaning states would make preferable targets.

“I think our only hope is an attack on US Soil … preferably Alabama, Louisiana … where the stupid people live.”

The statement did not merely insult voters in those states, it appeared to treat violence against fellow Americans as a desirable political remedy.

Headen also responded to the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by writing that America was “beyond peaceful protest.”

That comment added another disturbing layer to a record already filled with open hostility toward political opponents.

When The Assembly questioned her about the posts, Headen said she “can’t remember” what she had written.

She did acknowledge, however, that she has been “very vocal against MAGA” in the past.

That answer hardly resolved the matter.

Claiming not to remember inflammatory public statements may be convenient, but it does not explain why a candidate seeking public trust repeatedly appeared to embrace violent language.

Headen then compared her political sacrifices to those made by Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln.

The extraordinary comparison turned what was already a serious controversy into a display of political self importance.

“I’ve sacrificed myself just like Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross, and Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln and all the people that put themselves out there to sacrifice for our country,” Headen said.

“If a few angry moments on social media are the end, then so be it. MAGA will keep winning if we continue with not standing up for what’s right.”

Calling for MAGA supporters to die and suggesting that Alabama or Louisiana should face an attack are not simply “a few angry moments.”

They are statements voters can judge for themselves, especially when they come from someone asking to wield power in state government.

WATCH:

The caucus decision does not remove Headen from the race, but it strips away institutional support from North Carolina House Democrats.

It also leaves the party explaining how someone with such a reported record became its candidate against Blust in the first place.

Democrats often lecture conservatives about rhetoric, civility and threats to political norms.

In this case, the mask slipped, the posts surfaced and party officials decided the damage was too obvious to ignore.
