Some prominent Hollywood insiders who previously assisted Democrat political campaigns are stepping back in 2026, according to a Washington Sun report.

Their retreat is tied to frustration with a party they believe cannot control its radical left wing or follow a unified course.

Many of these industry figures helped Democrats retake the House of Representatives in 2018.

However, the report says they are showing little interest in trying to repeat that political success during the 2026 campaign.

Their earlier work extended well beyond public endorsements.

Hollywood insiders reportedly wrote speeches, coached candidates on stage presence, organized rapid response efforts, produced advertisements, and developed campaign messaging.

Novelist and screenwriter Gregg Hurwitz was among the Hollywood figures who repeatedly helped Democrats.

This year, however, he argues that the party is moving in conflicting directions.

“The Democratic Party right now is torn in a couple directions, and some of those directions I’m no longer willing to work for or countenance, and so I’m a lot more sparing about it,” Hurwitz said.

Hurwitz belonged to a group of Hollywood leftists that helped Democrats retake 40 congressional seats in 2018.

Their efforts included producing advertisements, writing speeches, and crafting messages intended to help the party win.

He later helped Minnesota Democrat Dean Phillips, who had raised concerns about Joe Biden’s fitness to serve as president.

Hurwitz said the far left then launched a crusade against people who questioned Biden, with the backlash even including threats of blacklisting.

Hurwitz blames what he describes as a socialist mindset taking control of the party.

He is not interested in helping Democrats win if the party refuses to put down what he views as an internal insurrection.

Screenwriter Marshall Herskovitz has similarly withdrawn from Democrat politics.

Herskovitz wrote for the television shows Thirtysomething and My So-Called Life and previously worked within the party’s political operation.

Calling the party leadership “ossified,” Herskovitz said he “no longer try to work within the apparatus of the party, which is what I did in 2018, 2020, ’22, making commercials and doing position papers that they could use or not use, that sort of thing.”

Herskovitz also argued that Democrats have proved unable to respond coherently to Trumpism. He came to believe that potential answers would have to emerge from somewhere beyond the existing party organization.

“Since Trump was elected again, and when I saw what Democrats were doing and not doing, I just came to realize that if there were going to be any answers, it was going to come from outside the party,” Herskovitz told the paper.

The Washington Sun also spoke with a former party supporter who criticized Democrats for language described as stilted and unnatural.

The supporter singled out terms including “unhoused,” “affordability,” and the description of criminals as a “justice system-impacted individual.”

The word “affordability” has become a particular concern among some Hollywood insiders.

They are warning candidates to stop relying on it because they believe the term simply fails to resonate with Americans.

Some of the Hollywood figures were also upset after Nancy Pelosi sought to distance Democrats from their messaging help.

Pelosi’s office said she was briefed on their recommendations but claimed the material was not useful to candidates.

“Let’s just say that when I got briefed on the results of these sessions, they were not things that we ran and shared with our candidates because they just weren’t relevant,” Pelosi’s office told the paper.

A Democrat consultant offered an even blunter dismissal of the Hollywood participants and their strategic advice.

The consultant said their celebrity and financial resources mattered more than their ideas about campaign communications.

“I don’t need them for comms strategy, I need them for their fucking fame and money,” the consultant said.

“After all, the last thing any campaign needs is another cook in the kitchen when writing talking points.”
