WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- President Trump announced an immediate White House ban covering CNN, MSNOW, and Politico over what he called repeated fake news reporting.
- Trump warned that additional media outlets could face similar restrictions.
- CNN defended its White House team and argued that carrying out the ban would violate its constitutional rights.
- The DC Circuit previously ruled 2 to 1 that Trump could ban the Associated Press from the Oval Office.
CNN responded Friday afternoon after President Donald Trump announced that he was banning the network from the White House, setting up another clash between the administration and a major media outlet.
Trump said the prohibition also covered MSNOW and Politico.
He accused all three organizations of repeatedly reporting what he described as “FAKE NEWS.”
The president announced that the ban was effective immediately.

He also warned that other media organizations he considers purveyors of fake news could face similar treatment.
Trump’s announcement targeted each outlet by name while sharply criticizing its conduct.
He described CNN as fake news and mocked MSNOW over its recent name change from MSNBC.
Trump claimed MSNOW changed its name because of a lack of viewership and credibility.

The president also accused Politico of receiving an illegal and ridiculous $8 million subscription directly from the United States government under former President Joe Biden.
According to Trump, the subscription helped keep Politico alive. He presented the arrangement as possible corruption while announcing the White House ban.
Trump said the three outlets were being removed from the White House because of their constant reporting of what he called false information about his administration and the country.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.” Trump said.

The president then put other media organizations on notice. “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.” he said.
Trump closed the message by identifying himself in emphatic fashion.
“Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP” Trump added.

CNN quickly pushed back against the president’s announcement. The network defended its White House journalists and argued that the administration could not interfere with its reporting.
“CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting. We have a right under the US Constitution to do that reporting without hinderance or interference from the government,” CNN wrote in a statement.
The network’s response raised the prospect of legal action if the announced ban is carried out. CNN characterized such a move as an attack on a constitutional right.
“Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right,” the outlet said.

CNN’s statement used conditional language while directly challenging the legality of Trump’s threatened restriction.
The network did not retreat from its reporting or its White House team.
The dispute follows a separate legal battle involving the Associated Press and access to White House spaces.
Last year, the Associated Press filed a lawsuit after its reporters were excluded from certain White House locations and press pool events.
That restriction came after the news organization refused to adopt the renaming of the “Gulf of America.”
The disagreement eventually reached the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.
The appeals court ruled by a 2 to 1 vote that Trump could ban the Associated Press from the Oval Office.
The ruling specifically addressed access to that White House location.
Trump’s Friday announcement broadened his confrontation with media organizations he accuses of publishing fiction and lies.
CNN answered by standing behind its reporting and invoking the US Constitution as the fight over White House access escalated.
