Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder Handcuffed Amid Mass Detentions at Netanyahu’s UN Speech Protest [WATCH]

Actresses Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder were filmed being handcuffed as NYPD officers took demonstrators into custody during a Thursday protest against Netanyahu’s UN speech.

The demonstration unfolded only a few blocks from UN headquarters, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Jewish Voice for Peace organized the protest, which drew participants wearing matching shirts bearing the message “Fund people not bombs.”

Demonstrators also carried banners and repeatedly chanted as officers monitored the gathering.

Among the banners displayed by protesters were messages reading “Stop Arming Israel ” and “End the Genocide.”

Video from the scene showed the signs being carried through the crowd during the demonstration.

Footage also captured protesters chanting, “Netanyahu, you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide,” during the gathering.

The chant directly named Netanyahu as demonstrators protested his appearance in New York.

Other chants heard in the videos included “Let Gaza live” and “Stop arming Israel.” The demonstrators continued delivering those messages while gathered near the UN headquarters.

An NYPD spokesperson said Community Affairs officers warned the assembled protesters that they needed to leave the area.

According to the spokesperson, the crowd continued blocking the intersection after receiving that warning.

“They continued to block the intersection. Multiple individuals who didn’t comply were taken into custody,” the spokesperson said, without giving a final headcount.

Although the NYPD spokesperson did not provide a final number, reports estimated that roughly 100 people were detained.

It was not immediately clear how many of those people faced formal charges rather than being detained and released.

Einbinder, an Emmy winner and a star of HBO’s Hacks, was among those recorded in police custody. Video showed officers leading her away from the protest with her hands secured behind her back.

As she was being detained, Einbinder shouted, “Free Palestine! Get Netanyahu out of New York!” Her remarks were captured clearly in footage taken while officers escorted her from the demonstration.

Einbinder could also be heard saying, “No bombs on Lebanon.” The footage showed her continuing to speak as she was taken away in handcuffs.

Sarandon, 79, was separately filmed being handcuffed by NYPD officers. Her detention placed another prominent actress among the demonstrators taken into custody during the protest near the UN.

Sarandon has previously said that her advocacy for Palestinians has cost her roles within the film industry. Her talent agency also dropped her in 2023, according to the source account.

Several other recognizable figures were named in some reports as having been detained.

They included comedian Caleb Hearon, City Council Member Chi Ossé, congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, and WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning.

The reports did not establish the precise custody status of every celebrity named. It remained uncertain which individuals were formally charged and which were released after being detained.

Transgender actress Elliot Page was also seen among the demonstrators. Page appeared in the crowd holding a banner, but was not named among the people who were taken into custody.

The matching shirts, prominent banners, repeated chants, and celebrity appearances were all captured as the protest unfolded.

Police ultimately intervened after the crowd was warned to leave and continued blocking the intersection, according to the NYPD spokesperson.

The estimated number of detentions stood at roughly 100, but authorities had not supplied a final headcount in the account.

The lack of clarity also extended to possible charges, leaving the outcomes for the celebrities and other protesters uncertain.

Videos from the demonstration documented both Sarandon and Einbinder in handcuffs.

Einbinder’s shouted remarks were recorded as she was led away, while Sarandon was shown being cuffed by officers during the same protest.

Thousands took to the streets of New York today as Netanyahu arrived at the UN.
