Giffords Claims Trump Is Terrible on Crime Despite Evidence

The last few years have been interesting, with regard to things like crime. Despite the doomsaying from the anti-gunners, the post-Bruen homicide bump never actually happened. Quite the opposite, really. The violent crime rate has dropped, and there’s evidence that it’s dropping for 2026 as well.

That’s fantastic news, and I was always curious how anti-gunners would spin this.

It seems the secret for them is to pretend it’s not happening. In fact, Giffords is convinced that, despite all of the evidence around us, President Donald Trump is terrible on crime.

The basis of this seems to be things like Trump rolling back Biden’s executive orders on guns, which needed to be rolled back anyway because they were blatantly unconstitutional. 

And, I get it. If you’re a gun control advocate, and you’re looking at what’s going to happen, you’d assume that this would change everything for the worse, and that for all of Trump’s law and order bluster, he’s enabling criminals.

The problem is that I might have just shrugged this off as Giffords being Giffords, with Brown being Brown, and just plain old fearmongering, but the truth is that we’ve had two and a half years of watching violent crime crash.

Not only has the president taken steps to empower ordinary citizens to protect themselves, but I can’t help but think that his attack on illegal immigration has paid massive dividends in public safety.

It’s perfectly acceptable to disagree about the causes of the drop, though. I can’t prove it definitively, so I get that some people will argue that it hasn’t done what I think it has.

Fair enough.

But at the end of the day, I can’t find a reading of what Brown is saying here that doesn’t run counter to literally everything we can see in the data itself. If Trump is so terrible on crime, why are we seeing results that are, frankly, damn near unprecedented?

I mean, is there crime that I’m not seeing? Is it in the room with us right now?

Look, I’m not saying that the impact gun rights has on violent crime is why I oppose pretty much every gun law anyone can concoct. To me, that’s a bonus. The reason I stand for gun rights is because “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” means that the right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. It’s just that simple.

I take the bonuses as they come, but it’s not my guiding star here.

Anti-gunners, however, claim it’s about safety, but then ignore data that runs contrary to their narrative. They ignore or downplay high-profile armed citizen responses to mass shootings, at least when they’re not trying to blame the good guy with a gun for somehow being irresponsible. They ignore the crime data.

I’m trying my damnedest to find a good reason for them to do that, even by their own standards. I’m trying to “steel man” this somehow, just because I think it might be helpful, and I just can’t see it.

Then again, I have a functional brain. That might be the problem.
