Scott Bach is the executive director of the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs. Bach candidly talked on Gun For Hire Radio episode #790 and held nothing back.

Bach has been an advocate/activist for over 30 years. He has served as the chief executive of New Jersey’s NRA state association for well over a decade and was the organization’s president prior to that. On the July 12 episode of Gun for Hire Radio, Bach spoke more candidly than ever. While the prior week’s episode with Dan Schmutter dove into some of the cases in New Jersey more in-depth, Bach’s episode cut right at the heart of the gun rights preservation and reclamation movement.

“What we’re dealing with is nothing short of a judicial insurrection,” Bach opened the episode with. “Okay, there is a battle that is going on, that is going on quietly. Nobody’s really calling it out. Nobody’s saying what it is, but it’s there and it’s in our faces, and it’s a let’s call it a relic of past administrations that have appointed federal judges, but there’s a battle going on in the courts.”

As a journalist, I’ve interacted with Bach since I first started reporting on the Second Amendment in 2015. While working on stories, I’ve gotten comments on the record from Bach more than once. Listening in on this episode of Gun For Hire Radio is almost like having a private conversation with the experienced advocate. Bach’s last appearance on the show prior to the July 12 episode was Jan. 6, 2024.

“There is a battle for global control going on and gun rights are one of the major turning points,” Bach said early in the interview. “Most of that battle was lost — okay — not in the Second Amendment sphere, but I mean in the other freedom(s) sphere. … there’s been kind of a global turnaround. But these are, I mean, this is to me, this is biblical. It’s nothing short of biblical level and that’s how I approach it, and that’s how I’ve always approached it.”

Bach says the problem is more than activist judges. “To me that’s the tip of the iceberg,” Bach said. “There is a much larger thing that is going on.” The current battle is between forces of control. Bach frankly says that on one side there’s freedom and righteousness and on the other darkness, micromanagement, control, and decay. That darkness, he says, permeates the courts. The courts have been infiltrated over the last few decades and only recently has liberty been breaking through.

“Our nation is supposed to be a place where freedom reigns,” Bach said. “It’s not supposed to be a question whether you have a Second Amendment. It’s not supposed to be a question whether you have the right to carry, whether you can carry in a park, okay, or a bar, or a restaurant, or a public place, or a private place.

“We have the right to carry. That’s our default setting, and what’s happened is we’ve become not just in government and not just in the legislatures, but in the courts as well, and that’s what I’m honing in on.

“We’ve become a place where there’s different players competing for control, and fortunately, you know, with Trump in office in his two terms, we’ve had a tipping at the Supreme Court level and a gradual shift back toward freedom in the lower federal courts, but the lower federal courts are still populated by activists — and activists is too nice a term.”

If you’re a New Jersey gun owner — and really, even if you’re not — this is an episode worth listening to (as is Schmutter’s episode #789). The snips shared here were within the first five minutes of the conversation, and sets the pace for the full hour-long show.
