A Colorado activist in charge of an anti-gun and anti-violence organization called Heavy Hands, Heavy Hearts has been convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a man at his son’s fifth birthday party.

47-year-old Lumumba Sayers Sr. was originally charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 28-year-old Malcolm Watson, who was shot while hosting a birthday party for his young son at a park in the Denver suburb of Commerce City on August 10, 2024. According to prosecutors, Sayers was seeking revenge for the murder of his son, Lumumba Sayers, Jr. who was shot and killed in 2023, and believed that Watson had some connection to the shooting.

If it sounds like this is the kind of scenario that the senior Sayers was supposed to be teaching teens to walk away from, you’re right. Heavy Hands, Heavy Hearts’ signature program is called Glovez Up, Gunz Down, and its billed as a 90-day program to teach teens lthe basics of boxing and kickboxing while being “mentored along their journey by lifelong practitioners of combat sport” in order to “learn discipline, respect, and perseverance.”

According to prosecutors, Sayers left an anti-violence event on the afternoon of August 10 and drove to the park where Watson was celebrating his son’s birthday with family and friends.

Multiple witnesses said Sayers Sr. walked up to Watson, greeted him and then shot him at close range. Sayers Sr. said he greeted Watson, heard a second person greet Watson, and then heard gunshots. His defense at trial was that another man who was present that day killed Watson.

Sayers Sr. was armed with an unregistered handgun, which he is seen on video brandishing immediately after the killing. He told jurors that he carried the gun in his pocket for protection — despite not having a concealed carry permit — and that he pulled the weapon after he heard the shots. His gun was not the weapon used to kill Watson.

Prosecutors alleged the murder weapon was an untraceable 3-D printed or kit-built “ghost gun” that was never found. They theorized that Sayers Sr. gave the gun to the other man, who then left the scene. Surveillance video shows the man running up to Sayers Sr. after the shooting, having a brief conversation with Sayers Sr. at his vehicle and then running away carrying what appears to be a covered-up object, testimony revealed.

It’s still unclear whether Watson actually had any connection or involvement with the death of Sayers’ son. According to police, there were at least eight different individuals who fired guns at each other in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood on August 19, 2023. Sayer’s son was killed in the shooting, and Sayer’s daughter was injured…. as was the mother of Watson’s children.

Even if Watson did play a role in that shooting, Sayers Sr. was supposedly dedicated to interrupting the cycle of violence and retaliation. Instead, he perpetuated it.

As you might have guessed, both local and national gun control groups have studiously ignored Sayers’ conviction and the black eye he gave to community violence intervention programs. After all, why would they want to call attention to one of their own violating Colorado’s gun control laws while committing a murder, even if it was to condemn his actions? They’ll remain silent about Sayers, unless or until they can exploit this shooting to demand even more restrictions on lawful gun owners.
