Anti-gun Potential Replacement for Platner Has Interesting Flip on Guns

Troy Jackson is the most likely candidate to replace Graham Platner on the general election ballot for senator in Maine. He’s been a state lawmaker in the past. In fact, he was Senate President. These days, Jackson is pushing a whole lot of gun control proposals, including a ban on AR-15s, despite knowing what the Third Circuit said and how the Supreme Court will likely rule on the matter.

I say “these days” because, well, Jackson wasn’t always an anti-gunner.

In fact, he used to be a pro-gun Democrat.

The man who’s poised to capture Maine’s Democratic Senate nomination has backed new restrictions on AR-15s, waiting periods, and a myriad of other gun policies the disgraced candidate he’s replacing shied away from.

Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has already received backing from enough delegates to likely become the Pine Tree State’s new Democratic Senate nominee after Graham Platner withdrew from the race roughly two weeks ago over rape and other misconduct allegations from former girlfriends. The Maine Democratic Party has until July 27 to officially select a new nominee for the high-stakes race to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins, but the shoo-in for the nomination is more committed to restricting firearms than the man he’s replacing–or even he himself was a few years ago.

“I’ve evolved because Lewiston showed us the cost of doing nothing,” Jackson wrote in a 2025 op-ed backing the state’s “Red Flag” law ballot initiative. “And I refuse to accept that tragedy is inevitable when solutions are in front of us. Maine deserves leaders willing to evolve, to admit when laws fall short, and to act when lives are on the line.”

Interestingly, though, he “evolved” after his son was hired by an anti-gun lobbying group based in Maine, which is something he doesn’t talk about all that much. I wonder why? I called it out in 2024 when it happened, and for some reason, Jackson’s not catching the heat he probably should.

Lewiston wasn’t the result of a lack of laws. Police and mental health professionals had everything they needed under existing laws to act and prevent that massacre. They failed to do so. It’s just that simple.

But Jackson wants to pretend that his principles “evolved” when there weren’t likely any principles to begin with. Maine was a pretty pro-gun state, despite being pretty leftward politically. Lewiston seems to have changed that, but Jackson made the switch easily. Suddenly, it wasn’t that he was defending the right to keep and bear arms or felt gun control wasn’t effective; he had just been “doing nothing,” in his words, and now he would do something.

In other words, he’s no different from Kathy Hochul or Tim Walz. They were pro-gun when it was politically convenient, but once it stopped being advantageous for them, they also “evolved” on the issue and became rabid anti-gunners.

The fact that Maine is about to put him forward is troubling for that fact alone, but then again, Maine has completely lost its political mind over the last couple of years.

Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
