Anti-Gunners the Same Throughout the World

There are profound differences between various nations. Even ones similar culturally, like us and Canada, are still very different in how they view the world…but with anti-gunners, it doesn’t seem to be all that different.

I’ve seen the rhetoric from around the world, and it’s remarkably similar. While some specifics are different, the similarities boil down to just one little idea: guns are bad and should be eliminated, even though the previous laws meant to stop them failed.

The issue is never about the killers among them; it’s the guns.

Take this editorial from Manila in the Philippines. The author talks about a couple of fairly recent mass shootings committed by young people.

The sad truth is that the bullets that killed those students did not come from an underground gunrunner or a back-alley black market. They came straight out of a government officer’s home — or car. When a teenager can walk into school armed with a government-issued Glock simply by reaching into his father’s drawer or taking his gun bag, the crisis isn’t just youth violence. It is the casual, unchecked leakage of the state’s own guns into civilian homes.

In the Tacloban shooting, one of the shooters used a service firearm belonging to his aunt, a police officer. Investigations revealed that the suspect broke into her house to steal it from a gun box inside a locker. In Zamboanga, investigators found that the gun used was a Glock service pistol assigned to his father, the chief of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) police in Zamboanga. The shooter gained access to the guns he used because his father left the weapons inside his car as they drove to school.

In the past, we clucked our tongues with every school shooting reported in the United States. Those Americans love their guns, we would say. Or, this doesn’t happen here because we have strict gun control laws. But such complacent observations ignore the deeply ingrained “gun culture” among law enforcement, military and state officials, where government-issued firearms are often seen as status symbols, domestic accessories, or personal heirlooms rather than dangerous weapons requiring strict containment.

Whoever wrote this already noted that one of the guns was locked away. The other was left in the car while the father was driving the kid to school. Neither of these really sounds as “unsecured” as the author would like for us to believe.

Maybe it’s just me, but the idea of a “gun culture” inside of the communities that rely on firearms to defend not just themselves but the community or nation as a whole seems to make a lot of sense. Just like woodworkers have a “tool culture” or sewers have a “fabric culture,” in a lot of ways, professionals who use a gun for work would certainly have an interest in guns. Not all of them, but many.

And while they might be status symbols, why is that? Could it be that they’re the only ones who can have them? Say what you want about the United States, but our police and military don’t hold their guns up as status symbols because, frankly, many of us have either the same weapons or better.

So if this shouldn’t be about the gun, what should it be about?

The answer is simple. It should be about why so many young people are so damned fascinated with mass killers and seek to join their ranks. That’s the problem, because if you take away the guns from the people who are currently required to have them, you don’t stop the problem. It’s not video games, either. It’s something else, something deeper, and we need to figure it out.

But, as we see here, anti-gunners are the same throughout the world. The tune never changes, just the language of the lyrics.
