The coolest gun I ever saw as a kid growing up was the Uzi. I never got to shoot one, but between 1980s action movies and the odd gun show, I became enamored with them, even if I’ve never had the chance to pull the trigger on one.
They’re kind of a talisman, in my mind, a token of badass that I really shouldn’t ascribe to any firearm, but I can’t help it with this one. I blame the late Chuck Norris.
Anyway, they’re cool.
They’re not cool when the guy forcing his way into your house has one, and they damn sure don’t make such people invincible.
According to the Normandy Police Department, officers responded on Aug. 13 to the 4200 block of Smithfield Place for a report of a burglary.
The man had been allegedly been involved in an earlier incident at a home and had been asked to leave the property. He later came back to the house, reportedly armed with a firearm described as a machine gun. Video footage from the home shows the man holding what appeared to be an Uzi-style submachine gun.
Police said the man forced his way into the home by “punching his way inside.” While officers were responding to the burglary call, it was changed to be classified as a shooting.
Officers arrived and found the man inside the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They immediately began attempting to save his life before the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
It doesn’t say who shot him; only that police found him that way.
It sounds like a clear-cut case of “he needed shooting” if ever there was one, but with an Uzi handy, that was all the justification needed. This was in Missouri, after all, and that means I guess the police didn’t see that part of the story as all that important.
To be fair, they’re right. It doesn’t matter.
You had a man who’d been ejected from the premises show up with a submachine gun, engage in an act of violence to gain entry into the home with said submachine gun, and ostensibly brought the gun for a reason beyond showing he owned it. That’s obviously someone who intends to hurt another, and what looks like a fully justified shooting by whoever pulled the trigger.
I’m curious where the Uzi came from.
Pre-1986 machine guns aren’t cheap or plentiful. Was it something he lawfully owned, or did it belong to a family member lawfully? Was it actually stolen from a lawful owner?
Obviously, we don’t have the answers to these questions, but they most definitely should be illuminating in the long run. Especially since the NFA is the strictest gun control law in the country, and one that anti-gunners are vehemently defending despite the absolute stupidity of it. If this is another datapoint showing just how ridiculous they are, so much the better.
And if it’s not, well, it also shows that even the NFA can’t stop some people from being morons and deserving to be shot for their idiocy.
