At Least Some Elected Officials in Australia Have Some Sense

The Bondi Beach terrorist attack was just that, a terrorist attack. Had guns been denied these monsters, they’d have used something else. Yet because guns were denied to everyone else, the attackers had free rein to carry out their atrocity. These are simple facts.

So what was the Australian government’s response?

More gun control.

More than that, though, they want to limit how many guns people can have, even if they’re willing to jump through all of the hoops.

It seems Tasmania has better things to do.

There will not be a cap on the number of guns a person can own in Tasmania, after the lower house voted not to amend the state government’s firearms reform legislation.

The amendment from the opposition lost 15-16, as debate on the government’s bill continued for the third straight day.

The changes proposed by the government, including setting up the Tasmanian requirements for a national firearms register and a buyback scheme, as well as mandatory minimum jail terms for serious firearms offences, were announced in the wake of the Bondi shooting.

Caps, which were not included in the government’s bill, were supported by Labor, the Greens, and independents Helen Burnet, Peter George and Kristie Johnston.

The state government, Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MP Carlo Di Falco, and independents David O’Byrne, Craig Garland and George Razay voted against them.

Professor Razay was the last MP to reveal their stance on ownership caps. All others declared their position during debate on Tuesday.

Razay seems open to caps as a concept, but didn’t want to impact the agricultural industry, which makes a whole lot of sense. Just the last part, to be clear. There’s no merit to limiting the number of guns the law-abiding can have because people who want to commit terrorist attacks aren’t really worried about the law.

Still, it’s good news that Tasmania had enough sense to not let this happen.

I wanted to make a Tasmanian devil joke in here, but everything I knew about them before today was from Looney Tunes. Finding out they’re actually pretty timid just sort of took the jokes right out of me.

Which is fine, because gun control laws aren’t funny.

People thinking they work is darkly hilarious.

Thinking that someone not being allowed to have more than X number of guns will make them law-abiding folks who won’t hurt anyone is even more hilarious.

For people in Tasmania, this is very good news, to say the least.

If only the rest of Australia had nothing to worry.

One of many problems here comes from the fact that you can only shoot one or two guns at a time, and only one with any real skill, but you may need a number of firearms to meet different needs. The shotgun I use for home defense isn’t the one I’d want for bird hunting, for example. The rifle I hunt deer with isn’t the rifle I’m going to take hunting for something like rabbits.

Considering what they have in Australia, miniguns should be in every household, just to deal with some of the deadly critters that seem determined to eradicate all human life from the land down under.

Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their extreme gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
