For years now, anti-gunners have been trying their best to push gun ownership into the fringes of society. More accurately, they tried to turn it into the dirty little secret that you might be free to take part in, but you shouldn’t talk to people about it. It’s kind of like being into freaky bedroom activities or liking the Twilight movies. You might do it, but no one can know, even if it’s legal.
And, frankly, we’ve played into their hands on that. People are paranoid about even talking about owning guns out of fear that the ATF will collect all of that data and use it someday to round up your guns.
I get paranoia, mind you; I just think that if you’re truly paranoid, you realize the ATF already has enough information to know you’re someone they should pay a visit to if that day comes.
Enter National Shooting Sports Month, which started on Saturday.
NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, invites target shooters across the country to head to the range this August for the 10th annual National Shooting Sports Month®.
Taking place as the nation commemorates America’s 250th anniversary, this year’s celebration carries the tagline “Let Freedom Plink” and recognizes the traditions of marksmanship, responsibility and freedom that have brought generations of Americans together through the shooting sports.
National Shooting Sports Month is a month-long celebration of target shooting that encourages experienced shooters, first-time participants, ranges, retailers, clubs and industry organizations to help showcase the safety, fun and camaraderie of the shooting sports. Throughout August, participating businesses and clubs will offer events, introductory and refresher classes, promotions and other opportunities for people to get involved.
“For 10 years, National Shooting Sports Month has brought people together at ranges across the country to enjoy the shooting sports and share that experience with others,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, ‘Let Freedom Plink’ is a fitting invitation to recognize the traditions we value, welcome new participants and help ensure the shooting sports community remains strong for generations to come.”
There are official ways to celebrate, which are at the link above. They include visiting a participating range, retailer, or club and taking part in the range challenge. Additionally, you should be public about it.
Share the Celebration
Help showcase the shooting sports community by sharing photos, videos and stories from the range throughout August. Follow Let’s Go Shooting on Facebook, Instagram and X. Use #LetsGoShooting and #RangeChallenge to join the nationwide conversation and encourage others to give target shooting a try.
Personally, I say to take it up a notch. Even if you can’t find a participating entity near you, go out and shoot. Take pictures of it. Show the entire world that you’re a shooter, you’re a responsible gun owner, and you have no interest in hiding it.
Anti-gunners have tried to stigmatize gun ownership for years now. They’ve done everything they could to treat us like a problem, and they’ve taken steps to make it clear that society can and should want little to do with us. They’ve punished students for shooting in perfectly legal situations and even punished them for pictures on social media simply holding a firearm. They’ve tried to make everyone think that no one should admit to being a gun owner.
Turn the tables. Make it clear that you’re a gun owner and that you’re proud of it. Use the hashtags above if you want. Create your own. Do whatever you can, but stop hiding who you are.
“Nice try, Fed!”
Dude, if the feds wanted to see what you’ve got, don’t you think they’ll just use the mountains of paperwork they already possess to see who has guns and who doesn’t? Don’t you think that they’ll subpoena data from people who sell ammo and accessories to see who has what? The feds have a lot more tools at their disposal than a picture of you at a gun range in 2026 shooting a gun that you may or may not own should confiscation become a thing.
Chill a bit, stop letting the anti-gunners dictate the terms of engagement, and remind our fellow countrymen and women that this was a nation founded on the armed citizen, and it’s still defended by them.
