Boebert Introduces Bill to Protect Right to Ship Guns

Shipping guns hasn’t always been the easiest of tasks. Only recently could you mail certain firearms, and if we’re being honest, there’s a good chance of that reprieve only being temporary. It’s the current policy, but what do you think the anti-gunners are going to do the next time they take the White House?

Sure, I’d love to believe that’s not going to happen, but I know history too well to believe otherwise.

Yet, if it were federal law that the USPS had to allow you to ship guns, then there’s nothing the next administration could do. Enter Rep. Lauren Boebert.

Having a Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate allows pro-freedom lawmakers the leeway to introduce Second Amendment-friendly legislation that will actually be considered and likely voted on.

Such is the case with a new measure introduced by Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, who is the co-chair of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus. On July 31, Boebert filed HR 9979, aimed at protecting the right of responsible Americans to lawfully ship firearms via common carriers.

“I have introduced HR 9979, the Freedom to Ship Act, to stop Biden-era policies and common carriers from discriminating against gun owners and blocking lawful firearm and ammo shipments,” Boebert announced on X. “My legislation protects privacy, holds companies accountable and restores the ability to mail handguns through USPS.”

In a news release announcing the measure, Boebert explained that under the Biden Administration, some common carriers forced FFLs to sign non-negotiable adhesion contracts to enforce unconstitutional gun control aligned with the Administration’s war on the Second Amendment and responsible gun owners. Similarly, the federal government has prohibited shipment of handguns through USPS for nearly 100 years.

We already know anti-gunners are outraged over the change in policy. This is going to be their first order of business if they get a chance, even if literally nothing has happened. They don’t care about outcomes, only control, and the idea that people can’t ship guns through the postal service unnerves them, even if UPS and FedEx have shipped them for decades.

Yes, everything about this is stupid, but the only stupid part about Boebert’s bill is that we need something like this.

Especially because criminals still shipped guns through the mail if they wanted to. They just lied about what they were shipping, and there’s no way the USPS can check every single box. There’s a reason we know drugs are shipped through the postal service, after all, and it’s not because postal inspectors found them after drop-off.

It’s because they arrived.

You’re not going to convince me that guns didn’t get to various places in spite of the previous policy. So, it just hurt you and me, making it so we had limited choices available to ship our guns. I’m not a fan of shipping anything USPS, mind you, but we have a right to have a choice.

So, unfortunately, this bill is needed, and we need the House and the Senate to get off the pot and actually pass this, because I don’t want to let us go back to the bad old days, particularly when there’s no reason for it in the first place.
