Chris Murphy Boasts Gun Control Lobby Has ‘Never Been Stronger’

These are not the best of times for the gun control lobby. With the election of Donald Trump in 2024, anti-gunners lost their office at the White House and their partnership with an administration willing to use federal agencies for a whole-of-government attack on gun owners and the Second Amendment. Now we have the DOJ suing state and local governments for violating our Second Amendment rights, and an ATF that is repealing the Biden-era restrictions and modernizing the agency’s rules over the objections of groups like Everytown, Giffords, and Brady. 

In the past few weeks, the Supreme Court has struck down the gun control lobby’s “Vampire Rule” meant to curtail lawful concealed carry in virtually all public spaces, while also ruling that regular marijuana use is not, by itself, reason to prohibit someone from owning a gun. 

More than half the country operates under permitless carry laws, and while the anti-gunners successfully enacted a ban on so-called assault firearms and large capacity magazines in Virginia this year, the law has been put on hold thanks to a statewide injunction. And Virginia was a rare bright spot for the gun control lobby, which couldn’t enact similar “assault weapon” bans in New Mexico and Minnesota this year despite their sustained efforts. 

Oh, and while all this is happening, violent crime in general and murders in particular have dropped to levels not seen in our lifetimes, despite the insistence of the gun control lobby that more guns inevitably leads to more crime. 

All in all, it’s a weird time to be bragging that the gun lobby has never been weaker, and the gun control lobby has never been stronger.

To be fair, the Second Amendment lobby does face some challenges. With President Trump in office and the DOJ Civil Rights Division suing states and localities for violating the right to keep and bear arms, there’s a sense of complacency among many gun owners. That, in turn, can lead to lapsed membership in 2A organizations or members deciding not to donate as much as they’ve done in the past.

While the gun control lobby has lost its foothold in the Executive Branch of the federal government, it has entrenched itself in many states and blue cities, where politicians have embraced the concept of an “Office of Gun Violence Prevention.” An out-and-proud gun control activist runs Duke University’s Center for Firearms Law, and the University of Minnesota Law School is working hand-in-hand with the state’s anti-Second Amendment attorney general on multiple cases aimed at restricting our right to keep and bear arms. 

Still, despite those challenges I’d rather be on the pro-2A side of the gun debate. We’re on the right side of history, for one thing. We’re not the ones citing racist gun laws as justification for modern statutes. We’re not the ones who are depriving the working class of exercising a fundamental civil right by making it unaffordable to do so. We’re not trying to ruin lives and put people in prison simply for possessing a firearm without a government-issued permission slip, nor are we trying to impede technological progress by imposing draconian restrictions on the use of 3D printers. 

Chris Murphy is right that the gun control lobby has a lot of cash, and they’ve done a very good job of eradicating any real respect for the Second Amendment from the ranks of Democratic politicians and candidates. But is the gun control lobby stronger today than it was fifty years ago, when it convinced Washington, D.C. to ban handguns? 

Is it stronger than it was in 1994 when it managed to get an “assault weapons” ban signed into law? 

Is it stronger today than it was in 2007, before the Supreme Court correctly concluded that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms? 

Is it stronger today than in 2013, when just four states recognized the right to bear arms without a government-issued permission slip? 

Is it stronger today than in May of 2022, when seven states and the District of Columbia still had “may issue” permitting laws in place? 

I honestly don’t think so. The gun control lobby still poses a legitimate threat to the exercise of our civil rights, but I’d say they are weaker now than at any point in my lifetime. 

Things can change, and if the Democrats regain control of the federal government the gun control lobby will regain some of its strength, but Chris Murphy is delusional if he thinks that the gun control lobby has never been stronger than it is today. Of course, Murphy seems to honestly believe that violent criminals will obey the gun laws he wants to put in place, so his delusion has been on full display for quite some time.
