Colorado Paper Calls Out Delusional Democrats on Gun Control Efforts

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, there were more than 1,000,000 firearm transfers conducted across the U.S. last month, including 82,103 in Colorado. That’s a 264 percent increase from July 2025, and the reason for the spike is obvious. Democrats imposed a new permit-to-purchase scheme for AR-15s and other popular semi-automatic firearms that kicked in on August 1, and Coloradans flocked to gun stores ahead of the new law to make their purchases before the new regulations took effect.

The editorial board of the Colorado Springs Gazette has a scathing new column taking those Democrats to task and calling their anti-gun efforts “delusional” and comparing them to gambling addicts who are always convinced they have a winning hand.

One difference, though: The gambler actually has a chance of success.

The legislature, of course, hasn’t a prayer. Each round of gun control it enacts is doomed to backfire.

Hence, news reports of skyrocketing gun sales last week — as yet another iteration of gun-control legislation was about to become law on Saturday, Aug. 1. It was as surprising as the daily weather forecast this scorching summer.

Such stories in fact have become a fixture of media coverage: astounded gun shop owners declaring business has never been so good; buyers waiting patiently in line who say they are buying their firearm of choice before the latest ban goes into effect.

Yet, gun-control advocates in the legislature press ahead, seemingly oblivious to the fact that in a nation said to have three firearms for every two people, they never will take guns off the streets. They never will keep guns out of the hands of workaday criminals or mass murderers.

They only will make it harder for law-abiding Coloradans to exercise their right to arms — a right guaranteed not only by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution but also by the constitution of the Centennial State.

“They will never take guns off the streets” isn’t quite accurate. Police can and do confiscate firearms from suspects every day. Cities hold gun “buybacks” where they collect dozens or even hundreds of firearms. But I think it is fair to say that those gun collection efforts will never outpace the number of firearms that are lawfully sold in the United States.

Even if half of those 1,000,000+ transfers were for used firearms, we’re still talking about at least 500,000 new guns entering civilian hands each and every month. The vast majority of those firearms will never be used in a crime, yet we are repeatedly told by anti-gun activists and politicians that it is vitally important to “get guns off the street.”

The psychology of gun control is a curious thing to watch when it overtakes lawmakers. Plenty of them are smart people, and they certainly are motivated to succeed in public office. Surely, they must be aware no data has shown gun-control laws led to any drop in gun violence.

They also must be aware criminals don’t care if a particular make or model of firearm is “illegal” before using it in an carjacking or an armed robbery. And that ex-cons who aren’t supposed to have guns easily acquire them and routinely carry them.

All of which suggests the latest measure to become law in Colorado, like its forebears, is nothing more than an effort to legislate wishful thinking. It’s as if they believe law-abiding citizens in a civilized society really shouldn’t have guns, anyway.

That’s exactly what they believe, but these laws do more than just legislate wishful thinking. They criminalize the exercise of a fundamental right. They’re not just ineffective. They’re harmful.

It’s not about stopping criminals. It’s not about public safety. The fundamental goal of the gun control movement is to reduce both the number of firearms in circulation and the number of Americans who own them. It may be an unreachable goal, but the anti-2A zealots can still do a lot of damage to our civil rights and the lives of gun owners in pursuit of their gun-free utopia.

Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
