A teacher in Fresno, California is out of the classroom and under police investigation after a weekend posting spree on social media that included some questionable content involving guns and her intent to create a “black militia.”
Since this California we’re talking about, my first reaction when I saw the headline from the California Post was skepticism. Did she really do anything wrong, or is this just a case of California’s hostility towards gun ownership rearing its ugly head.
Kenisha Daily, a special ed teacher at Madera Unified School District in Fresno posted several disturbing videos of herself on social media over the weekend describing her want to create a “black militia.” Daily also loaded weapons, including a shotgun and a pistol, in the videos.
And if this were all that Daily documented on camera, I’d say the school district was wrong to place her on leave. As it turns out, though, there’s a little more to the story.
Starting today, I’m starting a black militia. So if you’re black, if you want to shoot some guns, come find me,” she said in a video shown by ABC 30 KFSN. “We’re going to rob some white people.”
Yeah, that’s a problem. According to the California Post, concerned parents saw the videos over the weekend and contacted the school district, which in turn reached out to Fresno police. Officers went to Daily’s home and spoke to her, before filing and receiving a temporary restraining order. It’s unclear whether that order was a “Gun Violence Restraining Order” allowing police to confiscate Daily’s guns or another type of restraining order authorized under California law, like a “Workplace Violence Restraining Order.”
Either way, Daily’s not in the classroom this week, and since she could have had her firearms confiscated under either an ERPO or a WVRO, it’s most likely that she no longer has possession of any of her guns.
The teacher is now claiming that the videos were simply a joke that people took the wrong way.
With the controversial videos now under investigation and circulating online, Daily said in a statement that she “viewed the post as entertainment and never meant to threaten, harm, or alarm anyone.”
She went on to say she is “genuinely heartbroken that a careless post has caused people to question my character and the trust they have in me. For anyone who had been impacted or made to feel uncomfortable, I am truly sorry.”
Daily may be repentant, but she’s also a moron if she was honestly joking around and thought it would be a good idea to post these videos to social media.
Even in the gun-friendliest of states, recording yourself recruiting others to go out and commit violent crimes is going to lead to a police investigation. In California, Daily’s lucky she didn’t have a SWAT team break down her door.
Then, of course, there’s the racial component of Daily’s comments. If a white person recorded themselves urging folks to join them in a “white militia” so they could go rob some black people, they’d quickly be branded a racist. Why should anyone believe that Daily isn’t a racist too? How can the parents of white students ever feel comfortable putting their kids in her classroom after hearing her talk about targeting a group of people for violent crimes based on the color of their skin?
I don’t think that Daily’s comments rise to the level of a criminal offense, but I also don’t know how the school district keeps her in the classroom after she put her racial bias on full display in her videos. As of now, though, she’s only been placed on leave, and the district may very well bring her back to work once the furor has died down.
