Many people mark the Columbine massacre as the start of the modern mass killing era. It was the first such massacre to take place during a 24-hour news cycle, which many believe may have fueled the countless copycat killings.
Including a recent one in Mexico where the killer wasn’t hiding his “inspiration.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar says she was impacted by Columbine, and while I missed it that day, it seems she took the opportunity, like so many others, to use the anniversary to call for gun control
There’s just one problem.
27 years since the Columbine High School massacre.
27 years of failing to protect our kids.
27 years without common-sense gun laws.I watched it as a student. Now it’s only gotten worse for our kids.
We need an assault weapons ban.
— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) April 20, 2026
Except that 27 years ago was in the middle of the era of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban.
That would also be the ban that did absolutely nothing to stop two teenagers–kids who couldn’t legally purchase firearms–from getting a couple of guns, making some pipe bombs, and going on a rampage through their school, killing anyone they could. It’s just a good thing the bombs didn’t work.
That ban didn’t sunset until 2004.
So we had an assault weapon ban, and it did nothing.
Of course, neither of those two twerps used an AR-15, though you could still get ban-legal versions of them in 1999. They still didn’t pick them. They opted for other weapons that were more concealable. It wasn’t until the media started banging the drum about the AR-15 being perfect for mass killers that mass killers started preferring them to any degree.
But there was a ban in place, and it did nothing.
And then we have the rest of that tweet, which is just as moronic.
Numerous mass killings have been stopped in the last 27 years, with a lot of people in prison before they could hurt a soul. People became aware of what was happening and started notifying the authorities when something was being planned. The killings might have continued, but a lot of them never got beyond planning, only because the bad guys were caught first. We protected our kids.
And now “common-sense gun laws,” is it?
Well, I guess Omar and I agree that there’s nothing common sense about the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which she voted for. That’s a surprise, but it is what it is, I guess. After all, that law was widely supported by Omar and her fellow anti-gun Democrats. It was celebrated as a massive step forward.
Now, she’s either saying it didn’t happen or that it wasn’t “common sense.”
Since we all know it did, and I don’t think even she’s dumb enough to think she can gaslight us into believing it didn’t, I have to assume she means the latter.
Still, despite that, let’s also note that every anti-gun state in the country, including a couple that weren’t anti-gun in 1999, has passed numerous gun control laws since then. None of them has done a damn thing, but they’ve been passed. They’ve all been touted as “common-sense regulations,” even.
But I guess Omar also agrees there was nothing common sense about them.
Omar, as per usual, locked replies to her post on X, which is why you’re not going to see numerous replies calling her out on her stupid here, but you have to know that even she realized she was going to get dragged.
I mean, when you post nothing but idiocy, you better expect it.
