Moros Dismantles California’s New Training Mandate

Gun control proponents routinely dismiss our arguments that they treat the Second Amendment as a second-class right. They often offer the rebuttal that no right is absolute and that there are reasonable restrictions on all of them, which might technically be true, but they’re ignoring something important: no right is subject to the level of restriction that the Second Amendment is.

Enter California, because of course it’s California.

We already know what bills got signed.

One of the most egregious was the new training mandate. Even people moving into the state have to not just register their firearms, but go through a training class with a live-fire component.

And the Second Amendment Foundation’s Kostas Moros absolutely dismantles any reasonable defense of that mandate.

Yet everyone knows with certainty, barring a change in the majority, that it will uphold this 4 hour training course requirement for gun ownership. That result is not even in doubt, the only question is whether SCOTUS would grant cert on the issue to reverse them after.  

That difference in treatment is disgraceful. Just as disgraceful is that the Ninth Circuit doesn’t even care that we can see their blatant bias against the Second Amendment.

He’s not wrong.

While some have tried to argue that they’d like to see voting being “as easy” as buying a gun, they really don’t want that. For example, if I want to buy a gun from a licensed dealer, I have to not just show ID, but undergo a background check, even in a free state. A state like California throws up even more barriers, so as Moros mentions above, training classes before one can vote would also apply here.

The same would be mandating that people who move to California must undergo a particular class and pay a fee before they’re allowed to take part in a protest, or to attend worship services, or to tell the police they need a warrant to search their homes.

It’s inane, and yet it’s common. This kind of “thinking,” if you can call it that, happens all of the time.

Moros dismantled it in a simple tweet, and yet no one who actually believes the things about guns that Gavin Newsom believes will listen. They’ll engage in whataboutism in some ridiculous way, or accuse him of wanting dead kids or something equally mature and respectful to invite a well-meaning debate.
