In 2018, Rep. Eric Swalwell “joked” that he wasn’t worried about armed Americans resisting the federal government turned tyrannical because the feds have nukes. It was tasteless, to say the least, but it wasn’t something that bothered the people he represented. After all, he’s won re-election multiple times, though his bid for president fizzled out pretty quickly.
When the Oval Office became clearly out of reach, he started looking for his next move, and that looked like becoming the next governor of California. He seemed to be a popular choice for the office among state Democrats.
Unfortunately for him, an alleged past caught up with him.
Now, it’s all over.

Anyway.
The truth is that now, several journalists are coming out and saying that they knew about his…proclivities. Those same proclivities that Swalwell is, in part, calling “false allegations.” They claim it wasn’t their beat or that the women didn’t want to come forward, but the truth is that they supposedly knew and said nothing, even after Swalwell defended gun control not by saying it was good for public safety, but because the feds could nuke us.
Swalwell has always been notoriously anti-gun; he just wasn’t as high-profile as some of the other anti-gunners in the House. That’s something that likely bugged him, but it doesn’t matter now.
Oh, and we don’t have to worry about him in the House, either. He’s not running for re-election. He put all his eggs in that one basket, and now he’s going to be sitting on the sidelines come January, if not earlier.
So far, there hasn’t been a push for his resignation like we’ve seen from Republicans for Rep. Tony Gonzales, who is accused of a fair bit less than Swalwell is, but regardless, Swalwell is out. The only question is when his last day casting a vote will be.
We’ve seen gun control-favoring politicians get out of sticky jams in the past by doubling down on their anti-gun animosity. Here, that’s not likely to benefit Swalwell, even in the short term, and open up future political opportunities. No, this is him out, and probably out of politics for good. He might become a lobbyist for some firm and start glad-handing his former colleagues, who appear to also have known about this and just didn’t care, but that’s not going to have the impact he once might have had, especially on gun rights.
It’s amazing how many anti-gun folks seem to turn out to be terrible people who probably figure they deserve to be shot for something. I’m sure that’s not universal by any means, but if I had a nickel for every anti-gun politician from the House who engaged in sexual harassment of people who worked for him, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s strange that it’s happened twice this year.
