NYPD Commission Won’t Give Credit to Bruen Where It’s Due

NYPD Commission Won’t Give Credit to Bruen Where It’s Due

When the Bruen decision was handed down, anti-gunners lost their minds. That was especially true in New York City, which was at the heart of the decision. Now, they couldn’t subjectively decide who could carry a gun and who couldn’t. That’s not how rights work, and it pissed them off.

Since then, we’ve seen a historic drop in violent crime. As Cam noted on Tuesday, some are expecting an even bigger drop for 2026.

And now, as New York City experiences the benefits of Bruen, the NYPD commissioner isn’t giving any credit to the Supreme Court decision.

The NYPD has taken more than 3,000 guns off the streets of the Big Apple this year, as the number of shootings in the five boroughs continues to dip to historic lows, police brass said Tuesday.

The whopping number of seizures, which included 199 untraceable “ghost guns,” comes as the department revealed last week that the number of murders, shootings and gunshot victims in the city had hit all-time lows through the first seven months of the year, officials said.

“This milestone is a direct result of our precision-policing strategy: putting officers where and when they are needed most, identifying the drivers of violence, and taking guns off our streets,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced.

“I thank the brave NYPD officers who execute this work and our law enforcement partners, including the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership, who help us build strong cases, hold criminals accountable, and keep our city safe,” Tisch added.

In all, New York’s Finest seized 3,259 guns since January, led by 915 in Brooklyn, 782 in the Bronx and 764 in Manhattan over the seven-month span.

I wonder how many of those guns seized were from people who were actually criminals versus those who did what they had to in order to get a gun because New York’s draconian system made it difficult.

Still, if we look at past years, this seems to suggest the NYPD is on pace to seize fewer guns than the recent average, which is about 6,200 per year. Not a dramatic difference, of course, but still a slower pace.

One would think that, if taking guns off the streets were so vital to reducing shootings, why is it that they only seized 5,000 in total in 2025 when the homicide rate was also at historic lows?

The answer, at least as I see it, is that the Bruen decision changed the equation for bad guys. While the gang-bangers will still try to settle their scores with one another regardless of who is armed or not, most other criminals won’t. They’re cowards. They want easy prey for easy money. The moment they have to do something that looks like work, they run. The moment it seems they might get shot, they suddenly aren’t so tough.

And knowing that the NYPD won’t help them by denying carry permits dissuaded many from playing the tough guy anymore.

It would be nice to see the commissioner acknowledge that, though I’m not surprised she didn’t. It’s not the thing to say in the Big Apple. Acknowledging that gun rights are a good thing is career suicide there, at least on that level. Hinting that armed citizens have made the city safer is just unacceptable.

To be fair, I can’t prove that the Bruen decision is responsible for the drop. Correlation isn’t causation, after all, and I’m honest enough to admit it, unlike so many others who pretend every drop is because their preferred gun control policy is in effect, even if there’s no way it did a damn thing.

Tisch can’t prove any of that crap did anything, and I’ve got better evidence for the Bruen decision’s benefits than she does of taking a few thousand guns off the streets changing everything in a city of 8.5 million.
