While it’s a common trope among anti-gunners to blame the United States for so-called gun crime in other countries, especially Mexico and Canada, there’s at least some truth to the fact that the guns come from the United States much of the time. It’s not our fault that bad people want to do bad things, but yeah, a lot of the guns are trafficked from American sources.

But it’s not necessarily the fault of the United States.

In fact, one recent arrest for attempted trafficking didn’t involve an American. It involved a Pakistani national, a lot of guns, and a fake ID where the sun doesn’t shine.

NY State Police pulled over a Ford Explorer on Monday due to a traffic violation. Inside were three men. Two were Canadians, and the third was a man named Faizan Ali, who turned out to be a Pakistani national. The Canadians, Malik Bromfield and Kamal Salman, were evasive when questioned by police and gave answers that were contradictory.

According to the report, Ali agreed to a search, which led to the authorities discovering an ID card issued by Pakistan to an Afghan national in Ali’s buttocks.

This brought in the police dogs to do a more thorough search, which eventually led to the discovery of a hidden cache of guns in the vehicle. In total, 89 guns were reportedly recovered, with at least 17 being reported as stolen. I suspect more of them were, but the serial numbers weren’t recorded by law enforcement.

So, the first rule of hiding ID cards is not to put them in the butt. Good to know.

Honestly, I can’t tell you how many times people are busted for trafficking guns because of something absolutely bizarre. The most bizarre is when someone stuffed a gun in a raw chicken they tried to bring on a plane. Like that wasn’t going to be checked by TSA.

Still, this scale of this is a little more extreme, and considering the names of those captured, I have grave concerns about what they had in mind. While Bromfield isn’t exactly a Middle Eastern name, “Malik” is, and with an “Ali” and a “Salman,” one has to wonder if this was just ordinary crime or an attempt to arm terrorists in Canada.

Either way, good job by the New York State Police for the catch. Nearly 100 firearms in an SUV with at least two men likely to be Muslims, possibly all three being jihadists, and now no one is going to get hurt, and the potential bad guys are going to have to answer for their alleged crimes.

Meanwhile, at least some people are likely to get their stolen property back. The others will at least not end up in terrorist or criminal hands in a foreign nation.

I don’t like guns being smuggled out of the United States. I want them all at home so we can buy them and shoot them. I really don’t like it when we’re looking at a potential terrorist plot or an attempt to arm terrorists. The only parts of arms terrorists should get are the slugs, preferably delivered at high velocity and right into the brainpan.
