The media, especially the anti-gun media, likes to celebrate anyone touched by a mass shooting who also pushes gun control. They leave those who feel differently out in the cold whenever possible, all because they don’t want a narrative to develop that not everyone is anti-gun after a massacre.
In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, we’re seeing a lot of takes. Many of them are beyond disgusting.
The daughter of a Sandy Hook survivor recently went on TikTok and made an admission that I find disgusting, too, but not so much because of her words or feelings. No, it’s because of why she feels–or, more accurately, doesn’t feel–the way that she does.
The daughter of a Sandy Hook survivor spoke on how her desensitization to gun violence left her feeling little about Charlie Kirk’s death. She blamed this on congressional inaction on gun control, leading to hundreds more high-profile shootings in the past 12 years.
The TikToker hopes that the death of a far-right political commentator will finally inspire Republicans to take appropriate action on this issue, but it’s not looking good.
The normalization of American gun violence
On Sept. 11, fitness TikToker Molly (@moveswithmolly) diverged from her usual content to speak on the killing of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Her mother narrowly survived the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012, giving her family a specific perspective on the subject.
In her video, Molly laments her lack of emotional response to the shooting, but points out that there have been so many over the years that she can’t feel much of anything about them anymore.
“When I heard that Charlie Kirk died today, I felt bad that I didn’t feel bad at all,” she said. “That I am so desensitized to once again hearing about people dying from gun violence that I don’t care at all.”
Molly, of course, does claim gun control could have saved Charlie’s life, though she fails to express any policy that’s been up for consideration in the last decade that would have prevented it. It wasn’t like it was an attack carried out with an AR-15 or by a convicted felon or anything of the sort, so I fail to see just what measure she thinks we should have passed.
But the truth is that Molly says she’s desensitized to the violence, and I think that’s something we need to talk about. Why would this relatively young woman be desensitized to so-called gun violence when she’s clearly not someone living in an inner city where violence is simply a way of life? From what I can see of her home from her videos, she seems to have a degree of affluence that would separate her from that kind of horror.
So why?
The answer is very simple. The media’s wall-to-wall coverage of literally everything, all in a biased attempt to manipulate public sentiment, coupled with social media amplifying these stories and making it harder to avoid, should someone want to, makes it so people who aren’t actually experiencing violence to any real degree are becoming desensitized to the news of someone being murdered in public.
It’s the continued talk of a gun-violence epidemic, even as the homicide rate is still lower than it was back in my childhood. It’s the talk of how mass shootings are everywhere, even if they’re not what most people think of as mass shootings. It’s the talk of “gun deaths” while generally neglecting to mention how nearly 60 percent of those are suicides, which have a different root cause than homicides.
It’s the media going on anti-gun rants and pretending that our nation is one filled with nothing but violence.
Yes, there’s a problem, but when you bombard people with the problem and pretend gun control is the only solution, it’s not hard to imagine that some of them are just going to start shrugging when terrible things happen, especially to people they didn’t like in the first place.
The media isn’t swaying people like most of those in it like to think. They’re just making it so people aren’t caring all that much anymore.
Editor’s Note: The mainstream media continues to lie about gun owners and the Second Amendment.
