Michigan Lawmakers Introduce Permitless Concealed Carry Bill

Michigan is not a great place for guns these days. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has managed to push an anti-gun agenda that any anti-gun governor would be proud of.

So, it’s safe to say pro-gun legislation usually doesn’t have much of a chance of going anywhere.

There might be some exceptions, possibly, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you.

Still, some are going to give it the old college try, just the same.

Some lawmakers in Lansing say Michigan is too restrictive when it comes to gun laws. They argue the concealed pistol license requirement goes against the right to bear arms.

Big picture view

They say the effort is aimed at cutting down on government overreach. A group of Republicans argues that current Michigan gun laws are restrictive and wants the state to adopt what are known as constitutional carry laws, meaning no mandatory CPL training before someone can carry a concealed gun in Michigan.

“There are many who have grown up with handguns and shotguns and have learned from their father’s knee how to handle a gun, and it’s something that is second nature,” said Rep. Joseph Fox. “So it would essentially be on the gun owner to do the amount of training they deem necessary. And furthermore, we get the question of reciprocity, can we carry into another state? The answer is yes if they are a constitutional carry state.”

The bill’s sponsors admit that this isn’t exactly a slam dunk. It was framed as an “uphill battle,” which I suppose is accurate…if the hill is Mount Everest and you’re fighting an enemy armed with futuristic weapons while you’re armed with rocks.

I mean, you could win, but it’s not likely in the least.

Sure, they could likely get it through the House–Republicans have a narrow margin of control there–but then it’ll hit the Senate and get voted down.

Even if they could somehow cobble together a coalition with a few Democrats to get it passed there, Whitmer would veto it, and they’d probably lose those few Democrats. Not that it would matter, though, because there’s not enough of a majority in the House, either, to meet the two-thirds threshold.

Now, should it pass?

Absolutely. People shouldn’t have to ask the government for permission to exercise their rights. We don’t make people take civics training to vote, so we shouldn’t require training to exercise one’s Second Amendment rights.

But the issue here isn’t whether it should pass, but if it will, and on that, there’s a better chance of Iran becoming a superpower later today than of this going anywhere.

I’d rather see them try to find things they can potentially bully anti-gun Democrats into backing, making them take a pro-gun stand or else expose themselves even worse than they normally do.

That would be epic.

For example, tax credits for gun safes and other firearm safety devices and services. That’s a hard one to say no to when you’re also saying people need to lock up their guns. It even has bipartisan support, a rare bit of common ground in the gun debate.

But alas, this is politics. People don’t think like that.

They’d rather fail with grand gestures than win small.
