Louisiana State University is the largest university in the state. Because of the way college campuses seem to be, finding anyone who will admit to being pro-gun sounds about as easy as finding a goat that hasn’t been molested by jihadists in Iran. You might be able to do it, but don’t bet anything important on your success.

And, to be sure, when the local media went looking for students who would oppose the proposed campus carry bill, they didn’t have much trouble finding them, it seems.

But they also found supporters, at least to some degree.

Under the proposed bill, there would be restrictions. Firearms would not be allowed during active disciplinary or administrative hearings. They would also be banned at events with controlled access or security, such as football or basketball games.

Still, some students say those limits would not ease their concerns.

“It could lead to rash decisions, and someone can get really hurt,” Christensen said.

Others, however, support the idea.

LSU student Asiel Ramos said he would welcome the change.

“I honestly would like to carry my own, so, yeah,” Ramos said.

Ramos and his classmate Cesar Valle said they would feel comfortable with the proposed change on campus but would like additional safeguards.

“If we can do a background check then I think we should be perfectly fine,” Ramos said.

“People should care about their own safety, and I think they should be allowed to carry guns,” Valle said.

I should note that I don’t really see where Ramos is coming from on a background check–whether he thinks there should be a permit requirement versus constitutional carry, or whether he’s a fan of universal background checks–but I will point out that the law only applies to those eligible to carry lawfully in the first place.

Those who can’t lawfully carry, such as convicted felons or those with domestic abuse convictions, can’t bring a gun on campus.

Granted, we all know that it doesn’t matter what laws are in place; if someone wants to carry a gun on the campus of LSU badly enough, they will, regardless of the law.

All this measure would do is empower those who want to follow the law. They’ll have the choice to carry or not, rather than having to be disarmed at one of the most popular mass killing targets out there. Then it’s their call, as it should be.

Now, how strong is support for this law on LSU’s campus? I honestly have no idea. This could have been a signal that the support is pretty massive, really, or we could have the rare reporter interested in doing a balanced story on a controversial issue, at least to some degree. I can’t say which, though it could be both.

Either way, it’s pretty clear that the student body isn’t some monolithic entity that objects to guns on campus out of some misguided understanding of just how upset most people actually get over sports, politics, or most other topics, really. There are those who want people to be able to defend themselves should the unfortunate moment call.
