The Staggering Pace of Virginia Gun Control

Despite all outward appearances these days, Virginia is, at heart, a purple state. Most of the state is fairly libertarian or conservative, while there are a few urban enclaves, especially around the District of Columbia, where they’re anything but.

And while the Democrats basically cleaned up in last year’s elections, the reality is that people were looking at issues like affordability, which is what Gov. Abigail Spanberger and company ran on.

Instead of addressing that right off the top, they started with gun control. We all know this. I’m not breaking news here.

What really didn’t register, at least for me, was the pace of it passing. To say that a headline reading, “Virginia legislature passes 15 anti-gun laws in just 60 days,” was like a smack across the face to wake me up is putting it mildly.

In just 60 days in 2026, Virginia’s Democrat-controlled legislature has passed 15 anti-gun laws. Democrat Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who campaigned as a moderate but governs as an absolute leftist, has promised to sign all 15 into law.

The new laws include:

• HB217/SB749, assault weapons ban: Prohibits the future sale, import, or manufacture of specific semi-automatic firearms and magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. Proposes to allow owners to keep legally owned firearms acquired before July 1, 2026 (grandfather clause).

• HB40/SB323, ghost gun ban: Bans the possession, sale, or manufacture of untraceable, unserialized firearms.

• SB763, excise tax: Imposes a tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition by manufacturers.

• HB93/SB38, HB19/SB160: Enhances restrictions on gun possession for individuals subject to protective orders and those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence offenses.

• HB871/SB348: Requires secure storage of firearms in homes where minors or prohibited persons are present.

• HB21: Establishes new standards of “responsible conduct” for the firearm industry.

And the Democrats’ assault on the Second Amendment is far from finished. Other proposed laws include:

• Age Requirement: Proposals to prohibit the sale of assault firearms to individuals under 21 years old.

• Public Carry Restrictions: Aims to restrict carrying certain semi-automatic weapons in public places.

• Waiting Period: Proposed five-day waiting period for firearm purchases.

Think about that pace for a moment. That’s one gun control bill passing every four days.

That would be mindboggling even if they did nothing else, but they also found time to gerrymander the entire state and raise taxes. I still haven’t seen them do anything to make the state more affordable, though. With the increase in various taxes, though, it sure looks like they’re doing the opposite.

While Spanberger and her fellow Democrats never pretended to be pro-gun, they didn’t run on gun control. It was presented like an afterthought, really. It was clear that none of them wanted to present it as a priority to the voters.

It’s also just as clear that they were lying about that. This is what they wanted to take office to accomplish. All their talk about affordability was really just campaign promises. They wanted to stomp on people’s right to keep and bear arms.

Spanberger doesn’t have to worry about re-election in a few years because of Virginia’s one-term limit for governors. It means she’ll have to wait a couple of years to run for pretty much anything else, and she likely hopes no one will remember this by then.

But we will.

We’ll remember what she did. I’ll make it my mission to remind everyone of her broken promises, her and her party’s lies about their priorities, and how all they really cared about was curtailing people’s rights, even as they said they wanted to deal with rising prices. We’ll remember, and we’ll remind the entire country of who she is.

She’s the “leader” of a party that passed 15 gun control laws in just two months, simply because they could.

Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
