Tragedy in Louisiana as Convicted Felon Kills 8 Children

The last couple of years have been blissfully quiet on the mass public shooting front. Yes, they’ve happened, but there were only a few, and those were relatively low-key. Still incredibly tragic for everyone impacted, obviously, but not with the same loss of life as what most people tend to think of when you’re talking about a mass shooting.

That ended early Sunday morning.

While many of us were celebrating the Lord’s Day or just doing diddly around the house, an absolute maniac in Louisiana did the unthinkable.

A man fatally shot eight children, seven of them his own, across three Shreveport, Louisiana, homes early Sunday, according to police. It marks the nation’s deadliest mass shooting since January 2024.

The children killed were three boys and five girls ranging in age from 3 to 11, the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office told CNN. They included seven siblings and a cousin, the coroner’s office said. Police said earlier the ages ranged from 1 to 14.

The coroner identified the victims as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5.

A 13-year-old boy was injured after fleeing from a home and jumping from the roof, Bordelon told KSLA. He sustained a “few broken bones” but is expected to recover, he said.

Some children tried to escape out the back door during the shooting, said state Rep. Tammy Phelps during a news conference Sunday afternoon with other city officials.

Two adult women were also shot in Sunday’s attack, Bordelon told KSLA. [The killer’s] wife, the mother of his children, was shot first and had “very serious injuries.” Then [the gunman] went to a separate residence where he shot the eight children and another woman. The other woman, who was the mother of the eighth child killed, has “life threatening injuries,” he added.

The gunman has been identified, but it’s our policy not to publicize the names unless they are at-large. He was shot and killed by law enforcement after a carjacking and chase into the next parish. The officer-involved shooting is being investigated, but I sincerely hope it’s really either a formality or deciding just what kind of medal to pin on that particular cop’s chest.

The killer was a felon, having been convicted for shooting five rounds at another vehicle in retaliation for something. Because of that, he couldn’t lawfully own a firearm. Not that some people are accepting of that memo. He’d also been in the National Guard up until 2020, but he never deployed, so PTSD cannot be blamed for this.

Look, right now, there are still a lot of questions. One of those is how the killer got the gun in the first place. Despite Louisiana not going down the anti-gun toilet like California, this monster was violating federal law just by holding a live firearm. Throwing blame at the NRA and the fact that they donate money to politicians, just like every other group involved in American politics, is ridiculous.

Then again, this is Gavin Newsom, so what else can you expect?

Obviously, we’re going to likely be talking about this one for weeks to come. While I like having things to write about, both Cam and I have said to one another for years now that we’d rather be bored than see something like this happen. Unfortunately, it happens, and it’s time to strap in because we’re going to have to listen to people who know nothing about guns or the law have very strong opinions about what should be done.
