Two Dead, One Injured in Spanish Mass Shooting

How many times have you heard that mass shootings are a “uniquely American phenomenon” from some anti-gunner? Now, I won’t argue that we have more than most developed countries, and there are likely reasons for that which I could debate, but the truth is that this is a universal thing to some degree or another.

And, while we’re still going to talk about what happened in San Diego for a while, including the fact that it happened in gun-controlled California, we should also mention that it wasn’t the only mass shooting in a gun-controlled jurisdiction.

One happened in Spain.

A 25-year-old man in southern Spain has surrendered to authorities after allegedly murdering his parents and critically wounding four others, including his seven-month-old infant, in a rare episode of mass gun violence that has shaken the European nation.

The Monday night bloodbath in the agricultural municipality of El Ejido shatters Spain’s reputation as a sanctuary from gun violence. With two dead and two babies fighting for their lives in intensive care, local and national investigators are scrambling to decode the suspect’s motives. They are simultaneously working to trace the origins of an unlicensed firearm that inexplicably bypassed one of the continent’s most stringent and unforgiving regulatory frameworks. The implications for national security and domestic violence prevention are immense.

A Night of Unthinkable Violence

According to the Guardia Civil, the initial emergency calls pierced the quiet of the Almeria province shortly after 11:00 PM on Monday. Responders arriving at the Mar Adriático street residence discovered a macabre scene inside a parked vehicle. The bodies of the suspect’s parents were recovered with multiple fatal gunshot wounds, pointing to a deliberate and close-range execution. The immediate perimeter was secured as emergency medical teams rushed to stabilise the surviving victims.

The collateral damage of the domestic assault extended to the most vulnerable members of the household. The suspect’s seven-month-old son sustained two direct gunshot wounds and remains in a medically induced coma in a regional intensive care unit. An 18-month-old toddler, alongside a female relative and a 60-year-old man, were also extracted from the scene with severe injuries. Medical bulletins issued on Tuesday morning confirmed that all four survivors are in critical but stable condition.

This is beyond horrible. Understand that here and now. 

But Spain has major gun control laws in place. In addition to a criminal background check, there are requirements for medical and psychological screenings before you can get a license to own a firearm. Licenses aren’t generally issued for self-defense purposes, only things like hunting, target shooting, and collecting purposes, and firearm capacity is generally kept very low.

In short, way beyond anything that can ever happen here with any semi-reasonable reading of the Second Amendment.

And it didn’t stop a deranged man from trying to annihilate his entire family, apparently.

In fact, it looks like he didn’t have a permit for any kind of firearm. That’s right, boys and girls, gun-controlled Spain had someone in possession of a firearm illegally. Weird, ain’t it?

I can never be glad that something like this happened. Even if it weren’t monstrous to feel such a thing, every one of these stories, anywhere in the world, takes me back to the day I learned a dear friend had been murdered in a mass shooting in Seattle.

But what I can do is point out that, clearly, gun control won’t stop these from happening.
