It’s always about the gun.

For anti-gunners, it’s always about the firearm. If a mass shooting happens, it’s never about what the killer was into, what he did, what he believed, or anything of the sort. It’s always about the gun itself.

This is despite evidence that guns really don’t cause the problems some would like to believe.

And UC Davis’s Centers for Violence Prevention has found a new way to focus on the gun.

The primary purpose of this project was to develop and test a new large-scale approach to threat assessment that relies on objective data regarding firearm purchases. Specifically, to analyze firearm transaction records in California to better understand the firearm purchasing patterns of mass shooters and perpetrators of firearm-related crimes and to build risk prediction models to help identify individuals who might be at extreme risk for committing such crimes in the future.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To determine whether there were unusual pre-event firearm purchasing patterns among known mass shooters with a record of purchase in California (1985-2018), as compared to the general population of registered firearm purchasers in the state of California.

The plan is to use this and other data, along with machine learning — AI, in other words — to try to find patterns in the gun buying of mass killers.

I find this interesting since, well, anti-gunners have seemed to know everything about this already, which is why they keep pushing for various gun control measures in the name of stopping mass murders. It’s downright fascinating that this didn’t exist before.

But the problem here is that when we look, there’s nothing to suggest anything irregular when compared to regular people who buy guns. They don’t tend to stockpile them. They don’t get to buy specific guns at specific points that are unique to killers. They don’t do anything unusual from what we have seen.

And nothing in this particular announcement fills me with confidence they’ll really find much, because it doesn’t look like they’re going to compare it to ordinary gun purchasing behavior.

Buying a gun isn’t a criminal act, no matter what some people might want to believe. That means there needs to be a control, something to compare the behavior against, and that’s not mentioned in the least. That’s a massive problem, because if the behavior “discovered” turns out to be that they just went and bought a gun, then a couple of weeks later bought another, then a lot of us are going to look like mass killers without ever having any such intention.

Of course, since it focuses on more pedestrian crimes, it’s also clear they believe criminals are going to California gun stores to get their guns, which tells you all you need to know about what kind of fiasco this is going to turn into.

As always, the focus is on the gun, not the criminal. It might be one thing if they actually did this in conjunction with other investigations to put together a composite of such behavior so these people can be identified effectively. Oh, they say that’s what they’re trying to do here, but they’re just focusing on the guns, and the gun store isn’t some cursed box where people walk out violent.

This is a waste of time and money based on what they’re telling the public.

I shouldn’t be surprised, though, since that’s what academia does.
